Dumb question...Do you hang fenders when at anchor?

Seems like a fine idea in a tight anchorage with a lot of come and go and snug tolerances.
Is it an insult (or perhaps a subtle message)to start hanging fenders all over your boat when people anchor closer than you like? seems like a little piece of mind.

In many parts of the world, the fenders may be interpreted as an invitation to raft up.

No fenders at anchor not needed and you will just have to retrieve them before setting sail

Not unless you have a hard sided dink tied up alongside.

If we are expecting a friend to raft up or think another boat will be doing so. Otherwise no.

Not at anchor but sometimes the tight moorings in Avalon make it prudent on a falling tide. Always pull them up at night because they bang the hull.

Only for rafting. Would do it if I thought there was a real chance of being bumped in the night … but if/when I think that, I move.

Re: Dumb question...Do you hang fenders when at anchor?

We do. We use them where we tie up our dinghy. At night we normally raise the dinghy on two halyards and pull up the fenders. It would be really lucky in my opinion to successfully fend off another boat at anchor with fenders, unless you had maybe 50 or so. Better for me to plug in my guitar and play in the cockpit, I am terrible and no one cold withstand that. I have never done that yet though as the embarrassment of other cruisers wondering what I am hearing would be too much.

I have twice, when idiots came in after dark. Both times it paid off. They had anchored less than a boat-length away.

Re: Dumb question...Do you hang fenders when at anchor?

I stand corrected sir. Keep up the good work. I don't carry enough fenders to pull it off personally.

Re: Dumb question...Do you hang fenders when at anchor?

À not so dumb " dum" question! We usually don't put fenders at anchor. However, during the charter season and in tight anchorages, we put our fenders when a neighbor vessel drops improperly or too close. This gives us piece of mind at night.

Re: Dumb question...Do you hang fenders when at anchor?

The height of fenders for rafting would be higher than those for coming alongside a dock.
