Edson Wheel Brake pads

It's time to change the wheel brake but the kit is about $100 and all I really need is the brake pad and some epoxy glue to attach it. The bronze legs, cotter pin and plastic washers are fine and reusable.
It appears Edson offered the pads some years back but the part number now connects to the complete kit.
Does anybody know what the actual pad is made of or a suitable replacement?

Re: Edson Wheel Brake pads

I have a complete kit on board for our 1984 system. The brake has never worked on this or any other Edson equipped boat I’ve sailed. As a result, the kit will be for the new owners. We have always used a rope to pad eyes at the base of the pedestal. Totally works always. Anchored in the vicinity of wake producing big boats and our big rudder blade the back drive forces can be big.

I can suggest you experiment based on the remains of the old bits. If they are brake pad type material consider brake pad material for automotive use. People used to reline their own pads so appropriate glue exists. McMaster Carr is a good source for small bits of specialty materials including brake pad stock.

Re: Edson Wheel Brake pads

Most big cities have a business that rebuilds clutch plates and relines brake shoes.
Do a search for clutch and brake relining. There are many companies online. But by the time you pay for shipping both ways, it may not be much cheaper.
