Electric primer pump?

Hola~ So, in my boat, the lil’ flicka pimp to bleed diesel after a fuel filter change is tough to reach. Plus, it’s a slow roll... I read a blog or two where people have replaced em with an electric 12v low velocity fuel pump...Catalina 42, Yanmar J4–any input would be highly appreciated!

Re: Electric primer pump?

Hi. On my last boat, i used a small electric pump, piston type, as an extra feed pump.
This made getting diesel up from the tank much easier , and the self bleeding much faster.

First trip after I installed the engine, I just used two 5 gallon cans as a diesel tank.
When I heard the engine stumble, I took the homemade can cap with the diesel feed and return hoses through it, off the empty can and put it into the full one. Then I turned on the electric pump. most times the engine would cough a time or two but it seldom stopped. And if it stopped , it would start after like 5 sec.

You need a piston or membrane type pump. a impeller or gear type pump will not allow for flow when turned off.
On my "new" boat, there is a ball valved bladder, like on an outboard, to get diesel from the tank after filter changes.

Re: Electric primer pump?

we have a pair of 4JH2TE's and both have been retro-fitted with electric lift pumps.

makes bleeding after filter change a breeze...thoroughly recommend

just be sure to keep a spare electric pump onboard. they can fail but it's an easy swap.

cheers,

Re: Electric primer pump?

highly recommend- i bought an electric fuel pump from an automotive store and plumbed it in- regular fuel pumps pull fuel thru the pump with no problem when it is turned off-- when i change filters it makes it a no problem process. - cost me about 50 bucks total

Re: Electric primer pump?

Be aware of one detail.

If you install a electric lift pump in series with the original lift pump, and the original pump has any fail-mode leading to a leak into the block, you should not run it constantly.

A diesel leak into the oil sump on a hot engine, fed by the electric pump, could create a bad overrun.
