Re: Endless Summer... Best Place for a Second Sailboat?

if I were doing it now, I would have one in the PNW and one in Chile.

But I think Ken likes more 'culture' and less 'adventure' than that. Given that mix I personally would go for Scotland/Ireland (kinsale/oban) and NZ/Tasmania/great barrier.

Honestly the Caribbean, especially the eastern part, is perhaps our least favorite of the 'popular' cruising grounds. If the 'off season' needs to be 'tropical' I would consider perhaps the Thailand/Philippines/Indonesia triangle as an alternative - it is a longer way to move the boat thou. for closer - Brazil is pretty interesting - perhaps haul out in Uruguay.

Warm tropical islands are OK too, I can get my share of culture in the Med each year.

I'll be checking back in after a few days of moving the boat up to New Hampshire. Please keep the ideas coming. I'd like to investigate Australia/New Zealand someday, but me thinks for the winter, the boat's going to need to be closer to home for quick, inexpensive flights.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention... I like scuba diving.

Sea of Cortez is gorgeous, rich in sea life, friendly locals, and costs are unbelievably cheap. Good haul outs as farth north as San Carlos where I keep one boat. It can trailer.

Food is ridiculously cheap. I think we were spending 10 bucks for tacos( to die for) and a beer each. No crowded anchorages. Excellent fishing. Love it there.

Re: Endless Summer... Best Place for a Second Sailboat?

If you want cheap safe warm cruising, there is nowhere like the Solomon Islands, & the northern side of New Guinea. It is north of the cyclone belt, so little to worry about.

Thousands of islands, light breezes, safe if deep anchorages, welcoming people, both the island villages & the plantation owners/managers. A $100 of trade goods, I carried batteries, fishing gear & rolls of cloth, will buy enough food for a month, & there are plenty of fish in the sea. Most plantation people will keep inventing a reason for you to stay another day.

Most plantations have lots of stuff not working. If you have any skills, you can do well. I left after 8 years with twice as much in the bank as I had arrived with.

There are only a few towns large enough to have a yacht/sailing club, but those will welcome you with open arms, & offers of help if needed. It is a good idea to go racing with them. They won't care if you are fast or slow, they love an extra boat.

Yes it is a long way for most, but it is a bit like heaven when you arrive.

Ha, that reminds me, I delivered a boat to Grenada a couple of years ago. Upon entering the anchorage I notice a boat I knew from many years ago. I assumed, since decades had passed, that it now had a new owner...but as we motored by an old friend who had owned her back then popped his head out.

Talked to him later and he said he had been there for years now, not just in Grenada, but right there in that same spot!

We like Mexico and the Mexican people, and have visited many times. Cazumel offers excellent diving opportunities.

Ahh, but will the Mexicans allow you in after the Donald closes the border to Mexicans?

Most my co-workers as a nurse are first generation legal immigrants from Africa, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Central America... Spanish is the common language at work. We haven’t found your assumption to be case, these people are our friends.

You must be thinking of the American shipyard owners.

Yes, some most people don't let nationality or other fictional /arbitrary "classifiers" get in the way of just being friendly to their fellow humans

Exactly, ours has been the same experience. Now let’s get back to discussing destinations. So far I like all the ideas, keep them coming.

Ummm all of a sudden you don't recall allllll the trash talking comments you made to people about why they shouldn't cruise Mexico but instead go here you are, in the Med?! My favorite being you summing it up as a slummy, 3rd world country since they put TP in the garbage? The irony being some countries on the Med do the same thing Ken!

What's wrong with TP in the garbage? Or even poo, millions of us Americans do that every day.

Personally I see TP itself as stoopid primitive, gimme a bum gun any day.
