Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

Horses for courses.

When used for shore transfer with more than one on board,we will row or motor (I have the 4Hp motor already).

The sailing part is more for fun and could be wet.
That's why I am looking for something with the possibility to fit (maybe only when sailing?) wide sidedecks & a hiking strap.
Possibly even a selfbailer under an inspection hatch.

Freestanding rigging is not an issue, there are a lot of Laser style boats around with that option.Could even be retrofitted.

Agree it will be a compromise in any case.

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

Look at the Bauer 8 and 10 (probably more what you want).

There is a pond right outside the factory that you can try them out in, for rowing (but it is not big enough for sailing).

Chris Bauer is located just outside of St. Augustine.

Not connected with him, just like his boats and dropped by one afternoon.

Call first to make sure he has one there you can try.

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

Well another option might not be to replace your current tender, but just add a something like a minicat.

I know it really misses a lot of your criteria, but it probably really would score well for both fun and fast.

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

The same old story as with all craft………If you get something that does it all, you will have something that will not excel in any one area and of course the converse is true.
Get a dingy that fits all your needs quite well but forget the sailing part…and get a windsurfer or some such for your sailing jones. Presto! all needs satisfied …your cat will have the deck space for additional toys.

…………………………luv you all…………….mike…………………………...

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

In 4 months of cruising this year I sailed my "sailing" dinghy 4 times. One was in a sailing dinghy race! I saw one other dinghy sailing excepting the dinghy race. I plant to build myself an 11' cat dinghy this fall. Will mainly be motoring but could maybe fit a simple sailing rig.

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

several years ago we had some friends teach us celestial navigation in La Paz. The actual brains behind the instruction was Isabel, who got rides to shore from friends on instruction days, but her partner, whose name escapes me right now, sailed a tiny sabotty kind of dinghy with 2 leeboards of which one was gone to shore most often to windward and we would sit drinking coffee and watching him tack and tack and tack sometimes losing ground on the broken leeboard tack. I witnessed him take a half hour to make good maybe 150 yards. he liked it though. not what you are looking for, but interesting to me.

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

I have a Swanson Snug. 9' 6" 2 piece nesting fiberglass centreboard dinghy. Free standing 2 piece mast with a pocket luff lug sail rig. It does go to windward, sort of, but is OK on close reaching to running.

It is the best 9' 6" rowing dinghy I have owned, & outboards well with a 4 HP. I did once have it plane one up with a 6 HP, but was half swamped by the stern wave when I slowed.

I have had it for 40 years, & it is still quite sound, although some of the wood is nearing replacement time.

I used it as a tender for many years, but could not use its sailing facility in town anchorages. I had the rig stolen a number of times before I stopped using it in such areas.

Re: Fast Sailing Dinghy as Tender?

Coincidentally my name is Swanson and I designed and built a 12 foot nesting dinghy that was a slight revision of my second design. I call it the Long Sailing Dinghy 2.5, but it's name is Mintberry Crunch because it has all the good taste of mint berries with a satisfying crunch. Sounds stupid, but it has been good for us. The mast is a 12 foot sculling oar and there are 2 Lexan windows for sealife viewing and anchor set viewing.
