Filters are not standard sizes, Duh!

I changed the carbon filter element in my under-the-sink water filter recently. I put in one of 5 new 1 micron filters I bought at Home Depot.

Yesterday we noticed some crud, looking like very fine silt, in the tapwater. How could that get through a 1 micron filter?

I started checking filter sizes and found that my standard 10" filter canister requires filters that are 9.75 inches tall. The ones I bought at Home Depot are 9.25 inches and that allows sediment, and anything else presumably, to get through.

Until I can get some new filters I have added a few rubber washers to the bottom and top to make up the 1/2" and this seems to prevent prevented any visible sediment from passing.

I seem to learn these lessons the hard way.
