Re: first gig as a USCG captain

I would not trust the boat owner's insurance to cover a non owner skipper. Personal liability insurance is important.

Re: first gig as a USCG captain

Forgot to mention to the new delivery captain: No limited liability company (LLC) or Nevada corporation will protect you from personal liability if you personally provide the service, which is what a delivery captain does. You are a personal service entity and only insurance will help you if you personally cause, or are partially responsible for a loss or accident. LLC's and corporations only provide liability protection for a business owner if the business produces a product that, by itself, can create a liability, like the manufacture of say children's' toys. Or if you have employees who can cause a loss or injury to others. If a business owner only owns stock in a company the corporate form will protect against personal liability of the stock owner. But if the business owner also is and officer or director of a corporation there still is exposure. That's were insurance comes in again.

Re: first gig as a USCG captain

Congratulations!

I kind of ignored your thread in that I thought maybe you got promoted to Captain while in the USCG military service. Now that I see you are more or less one of us it's different so "well done" and sail safe!.

Re: first gig as a USCG captain

Spent two days in Dana Point becoming familiar with the boat and getting safety up to snuff. She is beautiful in and Bristol condition.

Great stuff, keep us updated. She looks like a yacht that could use a full time liveaboard skipper to take care of her.

Re: first gig as a USCG captain

We are all good to go ..... Just talked with the owner and him the crew have been down there this weekend getting down what asked.

Tomorrow I go back out on Vancouver lake and run two races to finish up the weekend of the VLSC annual regatta as the PRO.

The 6 pm fly out of portland and make my way down to Dana Point, CA. We will probably depart about midnight I imagine, and will take a nap after I get us our of the harbor.

If you would like to watch our progress up to Astoria here is the link:

Just got done with two days of power boat lessons up in the Seattle area. Pretty stressful teaching new boat owners that big ass boats.
