Flex Tape for Hypalon dinghy patch?

Has anyone used the Flex Tape to patch small holes/leaks in a hypalon dinghy? The stuff has done wonders in other places but wondering if anyone has had experience using it on a dinghy, good or bad.

Thanks,
Bill

Flex Seal Inflatable Patch & Repair Kits are designed to instantly seal air leaks in all types of PVC plastic inflatables.
It is not designed to be applied to a wet surface or used underwater. They don't mention CPSE.

‘Hypalon’™ ® is was the Dupont trademark for chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) synthetic rubber (CSM), made of layers of polyester or polyamide (nylon), and supplied with an internal (back side) layer of neoprene* (for air-tightness). Dupont stopped manufacturing ‘Hypalon’ in 2010.
CSPE (and similar alternatives, such as thermoset chlorinated polyethylene, or CPE) is still available from several sources.

* ‘Neoprene’ is Dupont's trade name for polychloroprene (AKA: chloroprene) synthetic rubber.

The Flex Seal liquid in a can will stick to hypalon. Not the spray stuff, the liquid in a can that you can paint on. I repaired an abrasion on our dinghy that was leaking air with it a year ago and it still holds air.

Re: Flex Tape for Hypalon dinghy patch?

I had a tough time with Flex Seal on one of my dingy. It did not work for me. Eventually, I had to pull the FS tape off and made a real mess. Would not recommend.

Yes. I tried it. It’s not that good. Try this:

Re: Flex Tape for Hypalon dinghy patch?

I painted that stuff on in August over my leaks in hypalon and use the dinghy every day. No leaks. It’s amazing. Just gob it on there nice and thick.

I discovered it purely by accident one day when I noticed a thick glob of it that I had left out was really rubbery. But strong.

I recommend to use the proper patches and glue. When following instructions, these are 100% effective

Re: Flex Tape for Hypalon dinghy patch?

If you are in the eastern Caribbean, you will have no trouble sourcing proper patch material and glue from either Budget Marine or Island Water World. As Jedi points out, these will work without worry and be as permanent as the manufacturer’s seams.

Anything else is a kludge and a crapshoot for effectiveness and longevity.

I agree that the real Hypalon repair kit is best but i've also had success with sail tape.

Re: Flex Tape for Hypalon dinghy patch?

Jefi, I have flex epoxy and real patches but am willing to see if something more recent might work. Without experiments there would be no progress. Would have preferred is someone else had been th guinea pig but absent that I'm willing to be one. Worse case is I'll sit on a beach with a beer and redo it. I've made bigger mistakes so that would be pretty minor.

Re: Flex Tape for Hypalon dinghy patch?

Moontide, short of using a patch kit consider using Tear Aid Type A before Flex seal tape.
I carry/use Flex Seal Type A on board for many years now.
Fast, easy (and available in most hardware stores) Amazingly good product.
Use on Hypalon, Sunbrella/other fabric, foulies, sails, excellent UV and very durable.
There is also a Type B version that is used for vinyl but have not used.
