Re: FREE, or close to free!

the pearson triton in Canada is a beautiful boat. She has a nice sail inventory and lots of extra gear, with the exchange rate a few weeks ago it was about 1200 USD pretty much free if you ask me. The guy selling it is real nice Alexander, give him an email if your interested.

The obvious is the giant hole where the transom used to be. Are you seeing something else?

Right. And earlier pictures in the series with boat hauled show an intact transom, with empty prop shaft strut hanging under boat. So “outboard version” means “frankenboat”

If the sails are good this is a pretty nice boat for very little money. Really clean interior. Re-glassing the transom would be a pretty easy repair. Install a bracket & outboard & you're ready to go.

Hahahah That'd be it! I think in the ad the owner calls it a "transom motor option" or something like that. Some pictures are pre chop job, others are post.

For me it's the misleading ad. Makes it read like thats a factory job, and makes me wonder what else is up with this one.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

The transom cut was an option on those E27s. If it was done well, it could be fine. If you ever get pooped, it'll drain faster, that's for sure!
A friend of mine in college lived for a time on his Ericson 27 anchored off the beach of UCSB. Very cheap student housing. He'd paddle his raft in in the morning and shower at the gym. He sure loved that boat and loved to brag about it. He used to take it out to the local islands often too. Fairly fast too, I always thought.

I know...I can't get this one out of my head! There are always noobs looking for a "sail around the world" boat for next to nothing...where are they all now? Maybe waiting for the canadian dollar to fall even further? How can it be this boat hasn't sold already? Location? Snow?

Re: FREE, or close to free!

If I had my trailer done I'd probably at least get it surveyed.

Comparison to Tartan 27 for offshore safety, vs liveaboard "comfort"?

Hmm offshore safety, well they both will right themselves fine but the Triton will do it a bit quicker. I think offshore would mean you'd need to reef a little earlier with the Tartan. Both are nice boats. I have always thought of the Tartan as a Caribbean or gunkholing boat with its shallower draft. Liveaboard, I think I'd pick the Tartan. Did I miss a Tartan 27 for sale somewhere? (not that I am looking!)

I think location is hard for most people and the lack of a trailer as well as a truck to pull it. I did my haulout today and the trailer took a bit of work to fit the boat but its wonderful now that its done.

The Columbia 29 is a beautiful boat, the Pearson Triton is the same, just drop dead sexy and solid built. When I spoke to Alexander he said they didn't have any snow up there. But who knows, most folks aren't looking for older boats with such solid pedigree.
