I sanded and faired her whole hull, re-painted her, repainted her decks, put in a completely new electrical system, electronics, LED lighting, all new pumps, new upholstery, new carpeting, etc. etc. etc. etc.

I saved that boat and because of me, she's still sailing around here somewhere. It was an extremely rewarding experience and I learned a ton. I think all of you thinking about doing this, should do it. Just make sure you have the time, the money, mental fortitude, and a patient significant other who likes to sail...

All that said, I'll probably never do it again
You did a great job!!

Trailer doesn't look great.

Round trip would be a very full day just for the highway travel, kids would have to come along, so I won't be going to eyeball it without a lot more due diligence first.

I suppose seeing Niagara with them on the way would be nice. . .

If you do go see it, please post pics!!

'73 Tartan 34c. No pics in the ad, but it sounds like a good boat. $3995, or $2500 if you have a log splitter to trade.

Now a good size shallow draft boat for gunkholing in estuaries and coastally? Tandem centerboards! Rare and great for teaching how to steer and balance a boat without the rudder! A good scrubbing, some paint... some kids who want to learn some woodworking and mechanical skills... someone with a crane and a flatbed truck who wouldn't mind volunteering to a good cause for a weekend to get her to a yard, a yard that wouldn't mind helping out by giving a good rate on long term storage for a bunch of kids, maybe a scout ship, to bring her back to life?... I can see it.
It's ALL about the dream. That's why we are all here.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Not for me.

Even the saintly leader of a salty boy scout troop would IMO be better off with a decent starting point, if you want to get "done" before your kids are all grown up no longer interested.

Not like parts are free either.

Especially given the crazy almost freebies we're seeing.

Now if that were something truly special, a Nor'sea 27 some nutcase abandoned, come back and we'll talk 8-)

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Which post was it that showed a burned out power boat hull that was buried in some mangroves, and then it was brought out, built back up and put back in the water looking like new? Now THAT was crazy! But then again.....

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Yes some are motivated by the bigger challenges.

Just the work involved's not something to inflict on those around you. 8-)

Joy in the finished result, yes!

WIW - That's an old pic. Those smoke stacks have been down for 3 years.

That’s a Columbia 24, I can vouch for the capabilities of that boat; had one for 10 years. For a 24 footer it’s roomy, tough and sails well... and the transom can be notched for the engine to tilt up in the lazarette. It’s in Dana Point.
