Re: FREE, or close to free!

Hi, John!

Believe me, you are preaching to the choir. I will not mention any names or specifically which one, but here is one that was posted "Right Here in River City." It is just one example ... I have been into, literally, Columbias for years.

In response to old used boats, which one might someone consider,

--------------

"Catalina - Yes
Islander - Yes
Ericson - Yes
Bristol - Yes (there used to be a bunch of B27's in San Francisco Bay)
Columbia - NO!

---------------

In my case, considering the number of containers that are floating around out there in the lanes, if I had to slam into one in the dark in open water, late 1960s Columbia would be at the top of my list with the Bristol coming in a number two.

Back in the 1970s when they were forced to cut costs shipping companies also were not losing 10, 000 containers per year off of the decks of of ships.
Today, - about one per hour falls overboard.

I am not sure why our friend there puts the Columbia at the bottom, but I can say that the 1970s and 1980s saw "lighter" hulls going into the water.

Let's take one of each in a 24 footer, mark them X, Y, Z, and W, and have at the hull with a sledge hammer to see which hull is which. A bet on a 1968 Columbia would be a good bet.

One comment, made over a decade ago, without any reason given, by a poster on many's ignore list

and very thoroughly refuted by several members whose opinion I respect.

It made me shake my head. Just because the person might not be the most glamorous person at the ball doesn't mean they don't know how to dance, IMHO.

After reading hundreds of posts, I trust my judgment about contributors' ratiocination abilities and sound judgement, nothing to do with glamor or dancing (wtf?)

Re: FREE, or close to free!

My point was simply some of the 1960s boats were not necessarily the most stunning lookers but are great sailers. And please keep the (WTF) to yourself.

I think the 1950-60's turned out some of the most beautiful boats personally. Not that I don't find the boats today with big sugar scoops and modern interiors absolutely stunning also. Heck, I just love sailboats hahaha.

At 2k with the running atomic4, this looks promising.

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/b...602500457.html

Also coming in just under 2k, this Mirage has been gracing the list for a while at a higher price. Sitting in the water at the dock, I can’t imagine a better situation to weigh a “buy it or don’t “ decision. Test sails are rare at these prices!

For 1250 more ($3250) you can step up to a 32 footer!

I personally like the smaller boats (singlehanding, cheaper moor and store, diy outboards...) but this boat speaks to me. The interior looks spartan (like the many $5k tartan 10s on Lake Michigan) but that’s a lot of boat for your money.

I was out in 5-7’ occasionally to 9’ waves on Saturday, and I could imagine that another 8’ of LOA and an inboard might have handled the sea state with a little more grace and aplomb. Hopefully lead prices don’t spike and some of these beautiful wallflowers will still be waiting for me to ask them to dance in a few years!

Re: FREE, or close to free!

5k isn’t free and there’s that deck to paint but the shots of the interior look very nice. I could see that cabin selling an admiral on the whole affair.

Agreed pretty boat. Is that an outboard well? Might go sail this one back to Charleston :-)

Doesn't say and I don't see a leg hanging down or prop for an inboard..
