Re: FREE, or close to free!

We have and Cape Dory 27/ 28 owners/ experts? I looked at two yesterday. One was flooded, the other knocks hollow just after the ballast on the bottom of the keel. Wondering if thats normal or delamination?

The flooded boat has been sitting uncovered for about 7 years. There was about 12" of water on the cabin floor.... my best guess was it was coming in through the tiller mount when the cockpit filled with water because the waterline there was just below the opening where the handle mount would be. I didn't shoot video of either boat and I do regret it.

But that one's almost **triple** the weight of the heaviest on my 8.5' list!

I envision getting holed, sinking fast like a stone (perish the thought)

Never seen such a long and **heavy** boat with that narrow a beam.

Talk about seaworthy, eh?

Anything similar out there just a little narrower, 8.5" or less?
Having sailed on that model and similar you need to get used to life at a 25 degree tilt. No form stability, all in the keel.

Now that one really is a torpedo with a keel on it, not much room inside that one! I like the way they look though!

Well it is spread out over a 35 foot hull with 25' of waterline. It's not going to sink any faster or slower than anything else I 'spect, there's a lot of displacement available to hold up all that weight... it will be a little sluggish sailing in lighter air though certainly compared to a lighter hulled cousin. The weight in the hull construction, while nice for strength perhaps, doesn't benefit the boat much in stability. As far as safety, I am not sure how Contessas fare, but we are talking about knock-down and/or capsize but they both will recover, though the narrower, deeply ballasted boats should do so a little faster. The more modern, flat bottom, sled designs... their GZ curves give me pause.. I think there is a thread somewhere talking about how quickly different modern hulls recover, and some beamy sleds, especially if the rig and sail are still intact when inverted, aren't in a hurry to recover since the flat beam that made them stable right side up also makes them stable upside down. But, keep in mind the conditions that would lead to a knock-down or capsize involves large waves, so those same waves will be rocking an upside down boat, of any design, encouraging it to right itself; none of this happens in a quiet pool.

Wow.
BTW I believe the CD27 was built like mine with the water tank in the keel behind the ballast and then more empty space behind that before the rudder, so it is not necessarily a sign of a problem if you bang on the keel and it sounds hollow.

Ok! Great to know! The boat I saw is pretty rough, but not terrible.

14,000lbs probably also makes it harder launching off a trailer 8-)
