I've seen this one in person. VERY rough shape. Hasn't seen love for years.

My first "starter" boat was not a Bristol shape beauty either (engine not run in about 4-5 years) but for $400 sale price and a little sweat and some elbow grease gave me 4 wonderful seasons of sailing. I ended up selling her for "only" $1,100 and then only because I took out a conked out MD5A (my fault of not maintaining it) and slapped a 9.9 o/b on the transom. The buyer used her as a liveaboard saving himself about $10K on rent during the season.

$4k, 30’, irwin citation. Looks to be in great shape. As we draw closer to the winds of winter, I suspect more boats like this will appear on the market.

Yep, I think you definitely get more for your money when the off-season approaches, and perhaps even more actually during the off-season. But then you're the one racking up the storage bills and maintenance costs of a boat you can't use til it warms up.

I bought my first sailboat, relatively small at 25', in the dead of winter, with snow on the ground. It was in a cheap yard and only cost me $4,000 or so in storage, bottom paint, detailing and equipment before I got to sail it about 4 months later. Pay now or pay later, that is the question, but you're going to pay at some point.

Why my plan is have a trailer mostly ready to go to pick up the miracle-bargain, whatever time of year.

And park her in the upper paddock at $0 per month, until I'm ready to start fixing her up.

I should have said "I'm surprised it's still afloat". There are better boats out there for free.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

First post.... I recently "won" a US 25 from BoatAngel for $10. Guy (Chris) spent 4 years refurbing the interior in his back yard. Exterior, though seasoned, is good enough to sail if I can get time off to go to the lake. Brand new Main!
