Worst case scenario, it looks like it has some decent hardware that could be salvaged.

I'm not saying that I'd take it, but if you need a mast and some hardware, free isn't a bad price.

The problem might be what to do with the stripped down hull after you're done with it.

I'm curious what the interior looks like. With the plywood nailed over the companionway hatch, that might mean that someone has broken in and stolen anything salvageable.

If I was nearby, I'd be curious enough to stop and take a look at it.

I can think of a few more worst case scenarios:

- Paying for dockage and insurance for a boat you can't use or sell.

- It sinks and you are responsible to pay for a massive environmental cleanup.

- The boat breaks free in a big wind, and damages dozens of other nearby boats and property.

- Someone sneaks onto the boat, slips and cracks their head open and you are liable.

- There are sick bats below, and when you pry off the sealed hatch you unleash a global pandemic causing death and economic chaos around the world.

Playing "worst case scenario" is easier when you are older and you've witnessed so many.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Here is a FREE sailboat in Hamilton Ontario (Lake Ontario, west end). Looks like a fiberglass boat from the 70's around 25 feet.

The seller knows nothing about the boat...can we help him by identifying the model? I think it looks like a Northern 25...but not quite. Definitely not C&C. I'm hoping someone out there will recognize that distinctive rudder/skeg.

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details..._Search_Alerts

From the ad:

Abandoned Sail Boat is free. I do not have details such as Size, Any Damage, Weight/Length, year, make , model or if it can be docked or not.

You tell me when you have everything needed to pick up it up off the stand and can haul it away and the boat is yours.

3800 views in free ads, 200 hundred confident people they were picking up the boat, 100 questions asked I do not have the answers too and 1 boat still remains.

Here’s a large free boat. I imagine it would be ideal for someone planning on a from scratch build

Brings back memories from years ago, my first boat was an O'Day 22. They're good starter boats and very well built.

"Free crap" being the operative term.

Geez Louize! What is *with* you guys?! Between you and "CaptWho"... yet another disaster.

What that boat LOOKS like is maybe an old Tanzer or suchlike where someone has done a piss-poor job of reconfiguring and patching the doghouse.

Walk away.

when an ad on craigslist is deleted by the author it usually means the item is no longer available . ( sold or given away as the case may be )

Re: FREE, or close to free!

!983 C&C 29 MK II $8,000

This boat if it in as good a condition as it appears is probably cheaper to "buy" than any free boat.
