Re: Grounded ‘Mega Ship’ Blocking Suez Canal in Both Directions

Is it possible the bow underwater projection got bent when hitting the sand and stopping that massive boat?
She'll have tendency to port.

Right so they'll just have to steer a bit to starboard to compensate.

Please see Posts#23 and #24.

I thought so, too, Gleason, but SailMonkey insists it's just the perspective in the picture.

She did hit that bank at 13 knots - so my contention is the speed plus inertia might have created enough force to bend the bulb slightly on grounding. Caveat: I'm certainly not any kind of engineer, so my "analysis" (and I use that term loosely!) is only that of a fascinated bystander.

The Owner's official announcement yesterday (March 26th) was that the hull is undamaged; she is NOT taking on water; and propulsion, rudder and prop are all undamaged and working.

If they can get her floating this weekend, the Owner contends that she will just continue on her route to Rotterdam.

I would say that the most telling bit of info is that this vessel's sistership - another "Ever-something" - has been re-routed around Cape Horn.

Hm.

Re: Grounded ‘Mega Ship’ Blocking Suez Canal in Both Directions

Thanks little...
. Prop shafts bend under less intense force, there is no doubt in my opinion that there has been some bending of this projection.
We will see..
Thanks for the summary.

Re: Grounded ‘Mega Ship’ Blocking Suez Canal in Both Directions

Perhaps it was the wind. But in hydrodynamics, size matters.

High winds, combined with ship–bank interaction effects, might have sent the huge container ship “Ever Given” into a spin, in the shallow waters of the Suez Canal, suggests hydrodynamicist Evert Lataire.
Bank effects occur in restricted navigation areas, where water, displaced by a ship, has nowhere to go. As a ship passes close to the side of a shallow channel, the water in the gap must speed up, causing the stern to pull into the bank, and the bow to be pushed away. In the case of the “Ever Given”, the effect could have caused the ship to veer into the opposite bank, as shown in the VesselFinder video.

“Experiment based mathematical modelling of ship-bank interaction” ~ by Evert Lataire
The forces and moments induced by the vicinity of banks on a sailing vessel are known as bank effects. An extensive set of model tests have been carried out in a towing tank to investigate bank effects induced by irregular bank geometries. Tests along sloped surface-piercing as well as submerged banks are carried out. A mathematical model (for the longitudinal force and sway forces) found on these tests is formulated.

Given that the ship had increased speed to catch up, Bank Interaction is a real possibility.
Guidance in those condtions is to run slow

Re: Grounded ‘Mega Ship’ Blocking Suez Canal in Both Directions

At a press conference, in Japan, on Friday, the president of Shoei Kisen [which owns the ship] told local media there were no signs of damage to its engines and various instruments.
“The ship is not taking water. There is no problem with its rudders and propellers. Once it refloats, it should be able to operate,” Yukito Higaki said.
Work crews were hoping to remove the ship as early as Saturday evening Tokyo time, he said, by taking advantage of tidal movements. “We are continuing work to remove sediment as of now, with additional dredging tools,” he added.
Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority said the Ever Given veered off course and ran aground, on Tuesday, when strong winds whipped up a sandstorm that affected visibility [see also “bank effect” https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...l#post3374360] .
There had been “no reports of pollution or cargo damage, and initial investigations rule out any mechanical or engine failure, as a cause of the grounding”.
Shoei Kisen said, in a statement on Saturday, that the company has considered removing its containers to get the weight off the vessel, but that it would be a very difficult operation. The company said it may still consider that option, if the continuing refloating efforts fail.

Sh*!

Cape of Good Hope - of course!

More coffee required. (Wrote that at, like, 5am here in TO....) Or maybe if I smeared Vegemite on it...

Thanks for keeping me honest, El Ping!
LittleWing77

P.S. It is interesting, tho' don'cha think? I mean the sistership is owned by the same company - which smacks of internally knowing that this fiasco is not expected to end well...

Re: Grounded ‘Mega Ship’ Blocking Suez Canal in Both Directions

Uh-oh.

Was just announced on CBC (7:30am EST 2021-03-27) that "weather-issues" are complicating the refloat...

Anybody got a local weather report for Port Suez?

Edit: Went and found it as well (Thanks, Gord)
https://www.fleetmon.com/ports/suez_...8/?language=en

So 25 knots from the North. Beam-on to the direction they are trying to shift that stern.

Zut-Alors!

They are moving ahead with removing about 25% of the containers

If they just sent the security home for the weekend, the ship would be unloaded of anything of any value by monday morning............looting is a national sport in africa.

Thanks the article, Pelagic. I see my wild speculations were not so wild after all!

Since the cranes can't reach the top of the stack (from the water - the equivalent of a 14-storey building), they are looking into using heavy-duty helicopters.

My armchair "analysis" is VINDICATED!

Pretty good for a non-Engineer chick, eh?
