One question where are you going to store all that on the average pocket cruiser

For baking when you don't have an oven or you want to economize on fuel: The "Wonder Pot"

I want an omni oven too. It seems to be much better at fuel use than trying to use the oven in our force 10. That puppy takes a long time to heat!

We just but a Luci light. It's a blow up solar light. We bought the cheap 3 light version and it's perfect for lighting the companion way when the house lights are off. It's also bright enough to read by in the cockpit. Did I mention its inflatable? Great stuff for 10 bucks! You could store a dozen of these on a small boat.

I have an Omnia and like it a lot. We have an Origo wicking alcohol stove and this device really focuses the heat enough to bake. It was horribly expensive (made in Sweden or something) but my only complaint is that it is fairly small. Very fast though and really light/compact.

I'd say you could make one quite easily. Certainly a good first attempt would be to get a bundt tin (large round cake tin with a hole/funnel in the middle and fabricate a metal plate to go underneath (also with a hole in it). Find a lid with small holes for steam...

There's a Wikipedia page and this version (not sure if the link is active):

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

Thanks to Don CL for pointing me at this discussion. Another interesting device we have is a Grillex portable stovetop BBQ. Our propane BBQ never worked well so we got one of these. Cooks well, although we don't eat all that much meat on the boat.

I LOVE the origo stoves (aka cookmate in Canada). Yes, expensive. I think the first one I bought cost more than the used stove I bought for my house! But they are so simple, and work so well, totally worth it. I've installed an origo stove on almost every bought I've owned.

The drop in models are usually a perfect fit to replace an older Kenyon or other pressure stove which were popular original equipment in the 70s. I think Hunter installed origo stoves for quite a while as original equipment.

Since they are made of all stainless, with only one moving part, they are a good value to buy used, if you can find one. I bought a very old, used 1500 (single burner), and it works great. A little steel wool and elbow grease and it looks almost new.

StuW back in my navy days I used to bake apple pies in my welding shop using an oxy acetelene rosebud a piece of 1inch plate and a metal mop pail. I'm just going to see if I can build one for under 5 bucks . If not I will continue using my Coleman camp oven.

Got a brand new one at a yard sale for 2 bucks.

lol...can't beat that price! Plus, presumably it has a thermometer built in? Nice size for bakeware; I think when they say 10 sq. in. they mean 10 inches square!

The only slight advantage I can see for the wonderpot is that it can cook from the inside out as well as from the bottom, because of the internal funnel.

Sounds like we should stage a bakeoff!

At home we usually bake a pile of empanada-type pies to take cruising for the first 2-3 weeks (already cooked, in frozen state). Then heat them up in the Omnia. Keeps the icebox cold and it's great as long as I remember to label the food (Er...is that cherry or pork?)

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

I just got one of these a couple weeks ago. I didn't mount it I just sit it on a table or up in the v-berth for the kids. It's pretty nifty, when they (or I) get up in the dark they just have to wave their hand and it lights up and it is bright! It rotates so I just shoot it up on the ceiling and it lights the whole place up.

Re: Handy stuff for pocket cruisers, et al.

I've found that a one of the larger (20,000 mAh) USB battery banks is incredibly useful to have around (like this one). You can recharge your phone or tablet multiple times on one charge, and you can do it anywhere.

I bought one at a pretty good discount pretty much on a whim, and then was shocked at how handy it was. Want to recharge your phone next to you while lying in your berth (or really anywhere), and don't have an appropriate (or any) outlet handy, no problem.

One charge lasts my wife and I, both charging and using a small tablet and smart phone each, three or four days. We've found it so convenient that we don't even use the USB power outlet I installed in the main cabin to charge our phones anymore, we always use the battery bank (but I do use the USB outlet to recharge the battery bank when we're running the engine).

The other thing I picked up on a discount that I was surprised how handy it turned to be was this led rope light. Hang it on the boom (obviously while at anchor or at the dock), or under the bimini, and it makes a fabulous cockpit light. Roll it up and put it in the bag, and it's a great lantern.

It does need a battery pack - you can use a large one like above which would last for weeks, or for all the electricity the leds require, one of the small ones that are about the size of a screwdriver handle that you find in the discount store for $5 works great (and fits in the bag).
