HELP

I AM SEEKING ADVICE ON SAILBOATS I AM LOOKING TO BUY. ONE IS A 26 FT SEFARER THE OTHER IS 24 FT BRISTOL. I WOULD BE SAILING IN TAMPA BAY & GULF OF MEXICO DOWN TO KEE WEST. BOTH BOATS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. I WAS ON A 46 FT CHOY LEE FOR A WEEK ONE TIME, SO I HAVE VERY LITTLE EXPERENCE. THANKS CAPT LEE

Re: HELP

Ditch the CAPITAL LETTERS. It's considered shouting on the internet. How does someone who is definitely a newbie get the 'nom de net' of CAPT?? I've got 1,000s of miles of bluewater cruising and 50 years of sailing in my wake but wouldn't think of calling myself captain.

Bristol has/had a better reputation. Both will get you started in sailing and should work well for coastal cruising. It really boils down to which boat works the best for you.

Re: HELP

Sounds like a fun size boat for the area! In older boats it's probably more about how well you like the boat and the actual condition. However, I agree that the Bristol probably has the edge in original quality.. based only on casual observation...

Re: HELP

Quality depends on the age of the Seafarer. The really old seafarers were built like tanks. I ran into the Newport bridge in a Seafarer 26 and nothing happened--boat bounced off and I kept going. There were lots of different seafarers over the years, so hard to tell without more information.

Re: HELP

Looks pretty clean from the pics. I'd start at $7500 with room to move up.

Re: HELP

It does sound like a good boat. Use the Google and you can find lots of other information on that boat.

Re: HELP

I always have a soft spot in my heart for my first boat which was a 1968 Bristol 24. Nice head room down below too and I'm 6'2". Did a lot of cruising all over Long Island Sound and into the Narragansett Bay area in mine. Still have great memories sailing it. Pretty tough boat. Nice fat keel is handy if you happen to hit a sandy shoal. Boat usually just sits there upright until the tide floats you off. Guess how I know.
