Question Help needed to identify my oven/stove

Hi all,
thank you for your help in advance
We have a 1992 Privilege Catamaran which came with a 2 burner stove and oven. Unfortunately the oven will not get past 150 degrees Celsius and so I never use it. Have tried to clean it all out but it did not make any difference.

I took it to a gas repairer who suggested that it was a thermostat issue.
However he was unable to id the oven or even locate the thermostat!!

There may have been a id plate on the back but it has completely disappeared. It has a very distinctive brown grid glass front with the opening handle on the left.

I was hoping that someone may be able to id the oven so I can get a new thermostat. Or if you have any suggestions as to how to get it to temperature that would be awesome.
many thanks Natalie and Brad

PS: not sure why my photos are upside down

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

Have you checked the gas regulator/valve to see if there is a normal flow of gas? Do the burners have a normal flame on high? If you've cleaned everything, I think the next place to look is the regulator/valve.

You might even just eliminate the thermostat if it turns out to be the problem and just use a thermoter in the over. They sell these little ones that hang from the oven rack and can be viewed through the glass door.

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

Thanks for your reply Copacabana.
The stove part works fine and we get a full flame.

Have used an external thermometer however the oven will not get above 150 degrees - there is possibly no thermostat actually in the oven - the previous owner had a external thermometer connected to the inside of the oven with a bit of wire.

You might try taking the oven burner apart. I have found debris, spider nests etc inside the tube that supplies the burner. Just fixed a barbecue burner that wasn't getting hot enough. Good luck

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

you could ask force 10 IF it is one of theirs? My RV has a 'BROWN" stove...and no that is not just about the colour. its a company name from the 1980's

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

It might be that the "main" oven burner is not coming on. Most units have a large pilot that heats a mechanical thermopile to keep gas on for the pilot burner. When the thermostat calls for heat it opens the "main" burner section of the gas valve.

When you light the pilot and then turn it on does the burner fire fully?

See if you can get some info off of the thermostat. An appliance parts shop should be able to match it up, they are pretty much generic.

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

Can you post a better picture of the oven burner and pilot? I can't see the pilot thermopile from what you posted. Do you have to hold the gas knob on to light the pilot and then wait for it to warm up to maintain the pilot?

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

Could it be it was meant for a higher heat-content fuel? eg LPG vs propane vs town gas (methane). This might explain low temp. Would be good to know if it ever worked properly from installation. I suppose that info is lost in the mists of time?

Re-jetting might be an option to match your preferred fuel.

When that happens to ours, we clean the jet with a hypodermic needle while holding the gas dial in to eject debris. It always works.

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

One thing to look for is to see if you can find a manufacturer of the burner elements and chase it down that way. There are at least a 100 marine stove manufacturers through the years but the burner elements there are only about a half dozen manufacturers. Most common are Optimus that makes multi-liquid fuel stoves but also makes gas elements commonly used. Another is Force 10. From my experience it sounds like you may have corrosion in you line or burner from condensation. There is also a small wire mesh or carbon foam filter right before the burner that maybe partially clogged. Good luck let us know what you find out.

I'm quite sure the safety thermocouple is that little jigger projecting at an angle over the large flame burner. The tube going from the thermocouple & into the double wall of the stove cabinet should lead to the "oven knob control" at top front of stove.
If access is gained to the back of the "oven knob control",you should see this thermocouple tube plus the larger gas supply in & gas out to oven burner tubes.
Also-there should be a fourth tiny tube going out of the knob control to a temperature sensor that is usually mounted in the double space above or in back of oven. That is the device that controls oven operating temp.

Cheers/ Len

Re: Help needed to identify my oven/stove

Parts of this stove look very similar to my old Force 10. I had the exact same problem as yours. The burners worked fine but the oven burner remained on low. The Force 10 controls the temp by changing the burner flow between a high or low setting. There is no pilot.

I decided I needed a new gas valve, the t-stat is built in to the gas valve. I talked to the company and and was told they were proprietary and no longer available. Rather than throw out an otherwise nice stove I bought a super accurate, commercial, Roberts gas valve for $80 on ebay and installed that. Works great now! Took about three hours to do, got all the parts by mail. Contact me if you want the part number.
