Hey, New Yorkers, Are You Still Sailing?

My friend and I will be in NY, Fire Island next weekend. Are the boats up for the winter? Do you think I'll find a charter boat to take us out? Is it icy yet??
Thanks, your warm and sunny friend from the south
Erika

Can not answer for NY, but almost all boats still in the water at Boston. Weather is hit or miss this time of year. Last year end of oct was shortsa and tee-shirt sailing.

As Don mentioned, it is hit or miss this time of year. I was out for a beautiful sail last week. Needed sunblock etc. Today is overcast and in the 50s.
I stay in for about another month.

Yep, it looks like it will be in the 40s to 50s - burrrrr. My friend is not a sailor (yet ) so I don't want to traumatize her with a icy sail. So it will be landlubbing for us. Anyone have any "must see" for Fire Island?
Thanks for the input,
Erika

bummer!! We fly in Thursday and out Sunday. Oh well, this was a bit of a spur of the moment idea. My girlfriend wanted to see the "Hamptons" and though I don't really go gaga for big homes, it sounds pretty, and it meets my requirements - near water.
Thanks anyways,
Erika

There are sailboat rentals available in Oyster Bay and Sag Harbor, which is in the 'Hamptons' while Oyster Bay is the 'North Shore'.
The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York: Sailing Lessons and Boating on the Long Island Sound - Home
Sag Harbor Sailing :: Sailboat Rentals, Sailing Lessons, Buy Sailing Gear, Kayaking, Fly Fishing, Hamptons, NY
There are also rentals from City Island, Manhasset Bay and likely Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Google: 'sailboat rentals xxxlocationxxx'
Bring layers of clothing to keep warm as 70* F is a real lucky number this time of year up here.
The Great South Bay which is to the north of Fire Island (which is not the Hamptons) is mostly shallow so this prohibits most outfits from renting sailboats which will run aground eventually. If someone has access to a beach cat, Laser or even Sunfish, these can be fun but the current can be a bit wicked in some of the narrower channels. I am not aware of any sailboat rental places on the GSB.
The 'Hamptons' begins at the south fork of Long Island by Shinnecock Inlet. Sag Harbor is 'officially' part of the 'Hamptons'.
The water out there is beautiful.
Have fun.

Hello Ocean Girl, yes we're still sailing in fact this is some of the best sailing weather of the year. Steady breeze cool afternoons I believe there is a race coming up in Manhassett long island. I haven't been sailing in years but since retiring recently I'm getting back into it via racing with friends, I figure its the fastest way to learn. Unfortunately I cracked a rib last weekend racing in Huntington while tacking I zigged when I should have zagged and jammed my ribs into the hand rail then the life line. Hey doesnt that show my commitment, or should I be committed...

It shows ya got a cool sea story And as any good sailor would, you sould expand that "broken rib" sea story to a force 10 storm and you were saving the life of a fellow yachtsman.

Hi Erika, As stated this is usually a great time to sail in and around N. Y. I sail
until late Nov./early Dec...but it does get cold. I'm afraid you have picked
a nasty weekend if the forcast holds... mid to hi 40's...rain...20-25 knots wind.
(should be in mid 60 range). If any change, we'll be on the water Saturday
(western long island sound, city island, manhasset bay) your welcome.
There are wineries on the east end of long island, mostly on the north fork
that one can spend an afternoon...tasting! Not that familiar with Fire Island
as far as things to do in the off season. I'm very familiar with Hampton's,
north fork, and city if need more info. Enjoy Hugo

Thanks everyone, we are here in Bridgeport and it is very pretty, though a bit colder than we expected. Gales and flood warnings out, so no sailing for us (bummer). We are going to the FI lighthouse when there is a break in the weather tomorrow. Does anyone have a fav place to eat seafood (of course)
Cheers,
Erika
