I’m working on the assumption that the OP’s tank is gravity drain

It is 100% legal in the US if there is a provision for a deck pumpout ( may not be legal for inland waters though).

Re: holding tank need to be closed in marina?

I switched to composting head no plumbing, no tanks, no smell. Except for emptying the urine tank two adults can use for month on one charge of compost. Then you can simply store in large container or place on regular trash or flower beds

Do they have pump out stations?

But, anytime your in an enclosed body of water, the holding tank should be utilized. Even if there is no pumpout available, keep the holding tank active until you leave the marina or, worst case, empty only on a falling tide.
I CANT BELIEVE THIS. NEVER EMPTY YOUR HOLDING TANK IN A MARINA OR WITHIN 3 MILES OF THE SHORELINE.

If you are saying the actual toilet has a macerator, that's not correct. Manual toilets do not have macerators.

A holding tank that empties by gravity doesn't have a macerator either.

Tridents, and presumably all modern submarines have '**** pumps' to pump out black tanks. Positive displacement piston pumps. Did it many times. Back pressure on the pump was easy to convert to ships depth.

Gray tanks were pumped with large impeller pumps.

We had two **** pumps on board, one fore and one aft. Had to take them apart a few times.

i should have said this was the original system on submarines, before the generation of modern deep diving subs, where pressure threshold was greatly increased as they were able to dive deeper, hence mechanical pumps.

What about the parts of the world where boats have no holding tanks and getting three miles from land takes a day of motoring?
