My partner is insistent that the name should be self explanatory. As I said he's very literal.

It would mean more to me if it fit into a story, or had something to do with the water.

I'm really, REALLY leaning towards S/V Jendela. Jendela is Indonesian for "window". I like S/V Vitre, but if people don't know its French they'll say it with a long "I" and it'll end up sounding like miter, in "miter saw."

But then again, I still like S/V Ungud as well, and that would be easy to create a logo that would look nice on a sail.

I could envision a black, tribal snake like this.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

The name has to fit, my last boat never got refered to as the boat, it was always "Freeform" because freeform was her name, there was just no questioning that ......not sure how you find the right name, you just know it when you find across it.

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

Ours came with the name ARCTURIAN, but we removed that before the aliens abducted us. (not into probing and such) I could just imagine running into a fog bank halfway to Catalina and having a "Final Countdown" experience.

That's why I liked Vitre. We could call her "Vee" for short.

Too Coys was originally chosen for the fishing boat that my dad and I were working on.

That was three boats ago now. LOL Coy is his first name and my middle name.

Ungud is an Australian Aboriginal serpent God, who is both male and female, and is commonly associated with rainbows, fertility, and the erections of the Shaman tribe.

Seriously. Does it get more perfect than that?
Sometimes you have to think about how it sounds over the radio to someone who doesn't know the aboriginal meaning.
Ungud sounds like Ungood, which could be interpreted as NoGood.
If cruising in foreign countries, your name is often taken literally

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

When we bought our Oyster 435 she rejoiced in the name of 'Guenole III' (a Breton saint), which the owner wanted us to keep. Later, he bought another boat and wanted to call it 'Guenole IV', so asked us nicely if we'd agree to change our boat name after all.

We were in a marina in the Balearics moored opposite a Brazilian 'churrascaria' grill restaurant the evening I received the email. We were watching an interesting-looking bird occasionally swoop down to pick up meat scraps before flying off again. Suddenly, it chose our mizzen mast spreaders as a perch. I grabbed the binoculars and as I focused on the plump bundle of feathers it turned its head and I saw two huge yellow eyes gazing back.

The Latin name for the little owl is athene noctua. Since choosing that name we have on a further two occasions become a temporary perch for little owls.

Which proves that, contrary to accepted scientific opinion, little owls can read...

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

When I bought my boat it was named StarGazer and I thought I would change it.
Then it just grew on me as it is my 2nd favorite pass time at night

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

Short names are good.... spelling out long boat names gets old pretty fast... ' this is Cuddlyfuddlebut... Cuddlyfuddlebut.... I spell...... Charlie Uniform Delta Delta Lima Yankee Foxtrot Uniform Delta Delta Lima Echo Bravo Uniform Tango.... I say again.......'

My boat still has the name she was built with... its bad joss to change a boat's name.....

The name of my vessel when I purchased it was Ein Sof, a hebrew jewish word relating to God. A/ I didn't like the sound of it and B/ in some of the places I've traveled and plan to, it just seemed stupid!

Re: How did you choose your boat name?

27th Chance, will be her new name. Noah's Ark is way to biblical for me. She's an Allied Chance 30/30,and the 27th produced. Hence 27th Chance.
