First, the poster of this comment clearly doesn't know the US used boat market. There are plenty of boats available for a lot less than their worthiness.

10k quid is what...$15000? I had a boat capable of crossing the Atlantic and couldn't give it away.

...and there are plenty of people who go sailing with no experience and learn by doing.
Several people blew this comment out of proportion.

There are 10k boats that are capable of ocean crossings.
There are very few turnkey 10k boats suitable for beginners to do ocean crossings.

But really, you could easily spend 3-5k flying over, traveling around to look at boats and then going thru the process of buying. Is the OP planning to get it surveyed? That can add 10% to the cost of such an inexpensive boat but as a newbie heading offshore, it could be considered a safety issue as opposed to a financial issue.
