Re: Hurricane or TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

I'm in Brunswick, Ga. We made it through without a scratch. Not the marina, but my boat, my wife, and me. I think it was Morning Star and whatever the marina at the condos is called. They lost 4 or 5 boats. Here, the winds had a pretty straight shot down the East River where we are. It got a bit bumpy for too many hours. Here is a shot of dock 1 as things calmed with a wind shift west of south.

Dock 1 with the marina office, fuel pumps, pumpout, etc. is toast. Still there, but broke up pretty bad. Luckily, it served as a breakwater and all the boats that I know of had little or no damage. I sure feel for those that lost boats and had damage at other marinas in the area. Obviously, this is an area that isn't used to seeing serious weather. In the end, as a friend I met here recently said.....there is no such place as a "HURRICANE HOLE".

To all my friends up the east coast, don't underestimate Hermine. She has been a survivor for quite some time now, and might just have some surprises left in her.

Beautiful in New York.

A few gusts this morning made me hoist the dinghy real quick. Now its settled back to a very nice afternoon.
However I am not leaving the boat until that thing has gone.
Windguru, which I dont like much but its easy, shows winds gusting about 28 to 30 tomorrow but with sustained winds of only 12 to 17kts, so that indicates squalls. Squalls can be spotted on the weather radar.

Its all looking 'easy' at the moment. But I jus don't trust Huey!

Re: Hurricane or TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

I sailed to City Island with some friends on Friday... beautiful day. Wifey came and slept aboard and panicked when she heard NOAA.. so we headed back with easterlies at 15 - 20... and decided to leave the boat to find a glorious Saturday!!!!! What's up?

Authorities prefer to err on the side of safety and not have to deal with getting spanked for missing something.

I made no special preparations so I think we'll be OK...

Re: Hurricane or TS: Florida W & E coast, East coast USA to NYC

It is quite nice today in NYC. If I didn't take down the sails yesterday, I'd be out sailing right now.

Mark, I'd think you'll be sitting pretty where you are. With the winds from the east / northeast, the city should block the strongest gusts.

My mooring field is open to the east. I hope the winds clock around a bit to the north, where I'll be protected much better. Either way, I'm confident in my mooring. Just redid the chain a month ago!

Hi Maje,

Dunno. I need to get the boat to Beaufort North Carolina by end of September. Then I have all October and November free. I dunno what to do. Maybe some land travel. Car rental even on Turo (an Uber type thing for renting cars) is expensive to go many miles.
So I am trying to work it out.

Then sail to the Carib end of November (I think this hurricane season will be a late finish)

Its the feeling of this new La Nina cycle. Its just making its presence felt now... that's why there's so many blobs on the map.
So, yep, sure, I am not planning a November passage. Maybe the last few days of Nov, but not the 15th. Or 20th.

We're going to be in Annapolis for the sailboat show. You could go too.

Thats on the cards. I would like to see it. I shall be there with folded arms. No way a salesman can squeak a deal outta me.

Or I might wear a suit and borrow shoes and see if I can get on board some really snazzy boats

You can get on all the snazzy boats without a suit. We'll see you there!

It looks like Hermine is still hanging around and heading for LIS. Still packing a pretty good punch.
