I'm Thinkin' Again!

I am considering taking a month off of work this summer and sailing all the way around Lake Michigan and possibly part of Lake Huron with my nephew. Anyone have any ideas on which ports to stop or sights to see?

Sounds like a great idea. I'ld just pack up the supplies and head out and sail where the wind would take you. In a month you won't get every place so seems like more sense to not worry about where you go. Might just be more fun that way. A AAA travel guide might be handy for shore related activities. It would be most fun if you avoided places you have been to many times before.

Use a little common sense about the weather and I would think it would be a great adventure.

WOW!!!!!

That is a grand undertaking. I would think that sailing all the way around Lake Michigan and stopping to smell the roses would take more than a month. My rudimentary calculations (Delorme Street Atlas) suggest that it is somewhere in the vacinity of a thousand miles. Allowing for bad weather, sight seeing, general lazing about and other bouts of foolishness, you may need more time. Otherwise, it seems to be a great trip.

Well I might not make it around the entire lake, But a good portion of it is definately in the works. I'll keep posting as the time gets closer.

Having just been up in your neck of the woods, I'd suggest the whole Mackinaw area at the tip of Michigan. There are also a couple of nice islands up there... I forget the names... possibly Washington and Beaver Islands, I think. The important part, like everyone else says, is not to "get somewhere", but to take your time and enjoy your month off.

Also, watch water depths in those lakes. We had a lot of trouble with marinas not being accurate about their depth (mostly at fuel docks). Also, get a crusing guide. Everyone up there kept telling us to use Richardson's. Yet... nobody stocked it or knew where to find it. ha ha ha
