Probably good for in-town commuting, but long distance ?? I don't see it.
Even if charging stations were readily available all over the place, it still takes some time to get a full re-charge.
Best in class charge times are down to around 18 minutes (10% to 80%). That isn't as fast as internal combustion vehicles but it is in the ballpark. On a road trip if taking a piss and grabbing a snack you likely are stopped for more than 5 minutes anyways.

<20 minutes is in the ballpark of what people can adapt to. Yes on road trips you may need to spend a bit longer "refueling". That is offset if you can charge at home by never going to a gas station for day to day driving.

I learned manual on a f150, 3-speed on column. Was a 1975.

I learned manual in a 1958 white super mustang 5 sp main 4 sp second and 2 speed axle
You miss a gear stop and start over .
And yes a diesel

My first car had the gear shift on the steering column.....my dad's old station wagon he handed down to me.
Subsequent to that. must have owned a dozen cars...all with manual transmission.
I love 'em, would prefer them any day over an automatic transmission, but it's rare to see a manual transmission these days...

I learned stick on a 1960's Sunbeam Alpine. British racing green. So there.

We still have a Mazda 3 with stick.

Wow! Those were rare even when I was a kid. I have only seen one in my life that was in use. A friend’s parents had one to make runs to the dump with.

It was really fun to drive because it was so weird to me.

But that one you have that’s really something. 1966.


Speaking of manual transmissions and changes in the world, I have been reading that a number of GenZ people enjoy manual transmissions. They want to keep some in ICE cars. They also want them in electric cars just because it’s fun.

There's nothing quite like rowing your own gears..especially downshifting..

My Harley had 5 speeds, neighbors could always hear me coming back...a quick blip on the throttle between gears as I was downshifting...music to my ears...though I can't say if the neighbors had the same appreciation I did..

I can remember when cell phones first came out. My first one had a shoebox size bag that I had to carry over my shoulder. Coverage was spotty at best. From there came a series of flip phones. Texting was a pain in the butt as the numeral keys had to be used.

Fast forward to today.....cell phones are in everybody's pocket. Most no bigger than a slim deck of cards. Not only is it a phone, it's a computer with every possible app on it.

From my first cell phone to today has to be 30 years or more.

I see progress in the EV world in the same way. We are just at the beginning. I'd like to re-visit this thread in 30 years.

Sourcing the raw materials to produce batteries is an issue. The mining is being done by slave labor, the processing is not much better. All that is being done is exporting the pollution and misery in exchange for a "greener" carbon footprint. There also may be a problem in total volume of raw materials available. The planet doesn't contain enough raw material to make enough batteries to power the number of vehicles we currently have.

I actually hope marine diesel gets restricted because it will reduce all of the monster power yachts which create all of those nasty wakes. My meager use is nothing compared to those.
But, since I don’t see how EV battery tech can power a 50-80gph thirst, and the powerboat industry is quite large compared to cruising sailboats - I figure I can sit back and watch.
Btw the answer won’t be regulation IMO but rising fuel prices in theory

And that was exactly my theory when I first started the thread.

Even though demand will go down for fossil fuel, I think enough companies will get out of the game and enough refineries will shut down that the price will end up going up. And that will change how we view everything.
