Re: Iridium Go

With a rented Iridium GO can you download gribs from PredictWind? Does it have to go through the Iridium email app to a phone first or can the Windows software download directly through the Iridium GO ?

There are different ways to do it. PredictWind has its own app for Iridium Go which will get the gribs for you. But I preferred to use SailDocs and the email app.

Using a GO you can download PW data from a MacOS, iOS, Windows, Android or RayMarine device.

IMHO it is the new gold standard. Yes it costs more, but only PW gives you access to the full European model.

As a delivery guy, I spent the money on the technology because it makes my job easier and deliveries safer.

With PW Pro, and a GO device I can download weather twice a day and even update my routing twice a day with each new forecast.

PW has a routing feature that allows the user to route for comfort. When routing for comfort the user specified preferred max wind speed and wave height. The routing program then plots to avoid that. While there are no guarantees, it is a slick option.

I receive Gribs from Saildocs, but can’t find a way to export then to OpenCPN. TIFFs and Jpegs from NOAA, come in Unencoded as a very long ascii string, how can I convert them into readable graphics?

Thanks for your help
The TIFF files that look like long ASCII strings are uuencoded (unix-to-unix encoded). This is a very old format that supports binary file transfers over 7-bit transport media. Back in the Dark Ages (the 1970s), 8 bit binary files couldn't be transferred. Just find a uuencode/uudecode app to view the files, or convert them to binaries.

Uuencoding is still a good workaround for transports that won't allow you to send binary files (like some text-only satellite services), although the binary file sizes grow by about 40% when uuencoded.

There are a plethora of GRIB viewers. The difference is the data.

ONLY PW has the full European model. ONLY PW has routing built into the app. ONLY PW offers a comfort routing feature to avoid wind/waves above a certain level. ONLY PW offers tracking inside the program.

Are there options that cost less? Yup! But for my money (and as a delivery guy this comes out of my pocket) there is no better value.
