Re: Is your boat part of your Doomsday Plan?

What if a comet or massive meteor crashes into the Nth Atlantic?
My guess is that every boat on America's east coast will be destroyed by Tsunami's.
Better to keep a boat on the west coast... unless of course..... .....

The concept of "doomsday" implies either:

a) Adherence to the beliefs that are specific to sects that maintain a specific approach to Millennialism
b) An extension of said set of beliefs perpetuated by popular culture (i.e., movies such as "Mad Max"
c) An extension of cold war fears

History, on the other hand, is full of examples of those who assisted others at great risk of personal peril during significant historical upheavals and lived to tell the tale. Furthermore, the broad range and far-reaching experiences of groups dedicated to assisting others in times of disaster belie the belief that such events bring out the worst in people.

There will always be those who use disaster as an excuse to exploit others, from looters to carpetbaggers, but they are the exception, not the rule. Most folks are decent and care for their communities and others. Survivalism is

Re: Is your boat part of your Doomsday Plan?

So, the thread took a bit of a drift.... But my boat is definitely part of my disaster plan.

And it's not a freak thing - I live in so cal. We could easily have a very bad earthquake that limited access to services.

So I've got a plan.
#1 - shelter in place. My motorhome is .5 miles away, no bridges. Fridge runs forever on solar. Always have a full water tank. Some food stored. Could easily go 2 wks till socal got restored to civilization.

#2 - bug out on the boat. We can walk (several hours) to the boat. Boat always has full water and mostly full fuel. 2 wks of food on board. In that time we could sail to mexico or north out of a disaster zone.

Of course, we've got some stores at the house and water in the HWH. But when you live in a part of the world where your house could easily fall down, it's nice to have some options. The boat is one of those options.

If I was a true 'merican, I'd mention that lots of ammo is helpful too....

I "bug out" for six months each year beginning around May 1st and do just fine aboard our bug out boat.

Re: Is your boat part of your Doomsday Plan?

Boat is floating in the backyard. Solar panels, watermaker. Can be in the Gulf in 45 minutes. Enough artillery to know it's gonna stay tied up back there until we are ready to go.

Now if we were really serious about doomsday planning, would be a bigger boat, with lots more solar. Hmmm, maybe that's the angle I need to work on the wife, to get a bigger boat! "Honey, it's a safety thing." At least it worked on justifying AIS and 4G radar. (Although I wish she hadn't seen the 30 boats on AIS between us and Bimini, when we were mid-way across the Gulf Stream. )

One EMP? really? Tell me please how that would work?

However, I agree on the web attack and a prolonged black out.

Re: Is your boat part of your Doomsday Plan?

Just stay where you are, give up and die? Not me. Steal someone else's stuff to save yourself? We carry guns and dogs to take care of you! Crawl in a box buried in the ground and hide? No thank you.

Yes, a fully equipped sail boat is an excellent survival strategy. Probably accounts for some % of the reason I keep the boat. Are we overdue for a global disaster?? Everything cycles.

They were specifically built for families to get out of Germany if another war happened in Europe. Whether that would actually allow a family to escape through the Kattegat and Skaggerak is questionable, but something to hold on to I guess.

As for my situation, in western Oregon we are all encouraged to have weeks of supplies available for a Cascadia fault earthquake. I think the best thing to do in such an emergency is to get the hell out of town - aside from the security issues, it will take a long time to set up the logistics for feeding the millions of people in the Willamette Valley, as well as the thousands that could be trapped on the coast after the expected tsunami. Hunger makes people do desperate things. From here on Hayden Island it should be possible to motor up to Bonneville dam and lock through to Hood River and further inland, which should be better. If the I-5 railroad bridge could be opened then it would be possible to head to sea and move north or south outside the affected area - a less likely and more difficult trip. I think it does make sense to think a little about such things, but not obsess. I'll leave preparations for Armageddon to the American Redoubt crowd.

Sooo, if I get your plan correctly..... You would head up river and escape disaster but ending up in Yakavegas?

We're talking about survival here - no one said it would be fun . But better to be able to walk to a grocery store and fill the tanks from a hose than wait in line for emergency rations and bottled water. I doubt it would be necessary to go further than Hood River or The Dalles to get out of the destruction.
