That staysail flogged for many hours partially unfurled. Either she couldn't furl it or didn't. I won't judge as she has more balls than me but I am jealous and hope I have that spunk when I am her age.

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

Just spoke to Jeanne on the phone. She is driving back to the boat right now with a new drogue and repaired staysail.

Yes, the staysail was furled, but just not tightly enough to prevent the damage. She peaked out of the cockpit during the storm but wisely decided against going to the bow to attempt to furl it tighter. (I mentioned earlier that even it at the dock it was a very high reach for me to put a tie around the clew.)

Right now she's watching the 5 day forecast and looking at mid-next week. She hopes to get out between two predicted storms. But this is very much up in the air right now.

Between that 2nd and 3rd low heading across in a week or are you looking farther out? Possibly I guess, to get far enough south... I wish her the best.

Good effort; I wish her lots of luck.

Yep you don't want to be tying up the clew anyway. It's a risky operation when you don't need to be taking risks. Longer sheets with three or so wraps pulled tight and tied off on the winches are all you need and can be done from the cockpit. Done it dozens of times in 50 knots.. My own boat doesn't have a furler... will when I save some pennies though.

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

buzzstar,

Crash course in series drogue cones:

Usually made from 3/4 oz nylon ripstop spinnaker cloth. Cones usually cut by hot knife.
Simple, straight stitch hems on both openings of cones, then seam the cone. #69 thread is used, same as for a 3/4 oz. spinnaker.

Suggestions for improvement:

Use zig-zag stitching for hems and seams, to allow stretch.

Possibility of using heavier weight polyester sailcloth, but the problems have to do with bulk. Could go to #92 thread, but not sure it would help with the problem. Going to polyester sailcloth would increase the bulk, making it more difficult to store.

I think if one were going to make one's own, one would spend the extra time to double hem the cones, and use a dyneema line for it instead of nylon three strand. One might consider going up to 1-1/2 oz. spinnaker cloth, but it will still increase bulk.

If you'd like more info, follow the links provided you above.

Ann

Are you suggesting dyneema for the main line or the bridles on each cone? Bridles sure, mainline I would disagree, you want the stretch in the mainline.

A week from today for weather or when she is ready? Forecasts I am looking at look pretty nasty for a while... more of what she just came in from...
next week it looks like she'll still have 10 to 20 on the nose, no?

DonCL, ready is is must. I'm just looking at headwinds as you say. Nothing worse than beating upwind down this coast. I just see a gap thurs that goes light/variable. I was outside her gate today, phone rang and was told to come home to the couch. Where I will now pretend I'm doing something she is going to do, again.

Yeah I see that window too. We'll see how it pans out. I imagine her boat is well-prepared for beating down the coast. Light/variable winds in big swells...ugh... she needs to get a bunch of miles behind her to get to more favorable breezes... I am curious to see what her plan is.

Hi Ben, your series drouge was made by the builder of Snowpetrel and his wife.
Luckily i never needed to use it, but it was good to know it was there !
It's been around for a few years now.
Cheers Graeme

Thanks for that, I wasnt sure If you had made it, or it was the first owners. Certainly looks like it has seen some serious action at some point! Cheers
