Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

Spoke to Jeanne. She hopes to catch the ebb tide on Sunday afternoon. (For those of you from other parts, the tides are very strong through Race Passage, near Victoria. A strong ebb tide will push her at 5 knots for several miles).

On another point, yesterday the news reported that a container ship had dumped a bunch of containers just at the entrance to the Juan da Fuca Strait, where Jeanne will be passing 12 hours after she leaves the dock.

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

pdxsailordiver,

I am positive she does have weather advice. She's leaving into a prediction of somewhat improving conditions. It IS very strong noserly condx, but if she is to get away this year, she has little choice but to do it, or she'll miss her Cape Horn weather window. These are home waters for her, the Southern Ocean, not so much. Imho, it is a calculated risk. She'll be using short sail, for sure, but she really does need to get south. The containers worry me.......as well as the wx. Sailing to a schedule, even one created by nature, can be the pits.

Thanks for posting the f/c. The f/c wind strengths are averages, as you may know, and she will see higher over the deck, and lower, as well.

Ann

Ann
I wish her nothing but a safe adventure.
This area is my home waters. I have been cruising this area for 30 plus years.

I'm not an expert weather forecaster but I've been looking at the Ocean Prediction Center forecasts and she may have a window of moderate W and NW wind Mon. night through Wed. as she makes her way south. There is a high pressure ridge moving through the area's involved. It may be moving to quickly though for her to take full advantage of it.

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

Jeanne did get away yesterday afternoon, into a huge ebb tide that promised to rush her on her voyage. But with very light winds she wasn't even able to make it to Race Passage to benefit from the ebb. I could tell she was bored when she started sending me text messages. She would still have been in sight of Victoria Harbour at that point.

After a long drifting night she's just a bit down the strait now.

These big tides are caused by the beautiful SuperMoon that we had last night. When I woke up at 4 this morning it looked like the sun was shining through our window.

Light in the strait, late again? Hate to see her waste all the sweet westerly outside this week. Then beating all next fri - sun.
Go Jeanne!

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

I looked at her gribs and radiofaxes yesterday and it seemed there may be another bash like the one she was thru before. I did not like what I saw but I am not very well versed in that area.

I hope the forecast will not develop as calculated yesterday.

Is it real optimum departure time from Canada? Looks like the windows are very narrow unless one gets very lucky.

I believe the need to get away this time of year is determined by her need to get around the Cape Horn during the southern hemisphere summer.

I thought that determined her need to get away some weeks ago... to be off the Horn by December 21stish ( ie 5 weeks from now ). When does this new departure time put her south of NZ?

Looks like Jeanne may get her window if forecast holds and she can get south a ways before Friday...

Don,

Are we looking at different wx data, or am I looking at the wrong part of the world?

See the image attached. Forgive me if I say something stupid. I do not know N Pacific at all.
