Jeanne was in the store for a few hours last Saturday. She seems very modest and unassuming. She bought a survival suit. Hard time getting one to fit that she could put on - she is not many inches over 5 feet tall.

I hope she has a great voyage.

Yep, just like her last RTW. She had to abandon the one before that due to some damage (that I don't remember the details of) that lead her to stop in Hobart for repairs.

Good for her..
As for the why.. I doubt she really cares as its where she wants to be.. away from the madness of the world.
The 'Record Attempt' is likely just to satisfy the Talking Heads who need a reason for the 'Why.??'

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

Having read the posts of people who have met Jeanne I can begin to understand a little more about her motivation.
I guess she wouldn’t attempt a forth circumnavigation if she didn’t enjoy it, and she certainly knows what she’s in for.
She is also far removed from the lunatics who set sail on a wooden plank, then need rescuing at the peril of others.
Still, I think there must be a complexity to the lady which requires that she spend so much time alone, and in what can possibly become dire circumstances.
Of course, it’s her choice, so I wish her the very best of luck, and hope we eventually hear of her safe return.

Re: Jeanne Socrates Oldest Person solo RTW attempt

She suffered a knockdown and a lot of boat damage not far from Cape Horn. She stopped there for repairs. I think later she restarted the attempt from Cape Town but I'm not sure of that.

I don't think this statement is accurate, she has been at sea for 3 days, how did she get close to Cape Horn and I believe she is sailing from Victoria North America.

John ZA, if you read my post again I think you may start to comprehend it.

She also lost a boat on a Mexican beach after her autopilot failed.

Not yet. You have inspired me. Heck of a fine way to go. Maybe I can try it at age 107, but croak just before I complete the trip so the record about finishing remains. If you do not know about the reason for 107, but want to just PM me and I will provide the info. It is not particularly interesting, and takes too many electrons to recount here.

Attempt previous to this one.

I pretty sure she activated her EPIRB and when a Chilean fishing boat turned up told them they were no longer required. I'm sure it will be in her blog.
Fixed stuff in Ushuaia and then called at the Falklands where I met her in mid 2011.

'Socrates contacted the Chilean Navy and Falmouth Coast Guard to inform them of her situation. The fishing vessel Magellanes III arrived on scene to offer assistance,'

What an inspiration! I'm 64 and contemplating a cruise to Mexico and maybe on to French Polynesia . It's wonderful to have a senior out there cutting the trail
