Definitely not calling it quits having way too much fun
If the jib had a nice clean airfoil shape and was not luffing anywhere then you were likely just fine. Youve really got to crank hard to break sailing hardware in good condition...its designed for heavier loads then you are likely to exert without being a real gorilla with the winch...like both hands on winch handle and full body weight turning on low speed.

How hard did you crank subjectively? One hand high speed, two hands high speed, one hand low speed, two hands low speed?

Also body mechanics play a big role in how much force you can exert. I often have students aboard who are bigger, stronger, younger than me and its not uncommon for me to out pull/grind them 2:1.

Re: Jib Sheet Tension

Is the jib luff the full length of the headstay/furler? If your jib lead is all the way forward and your leech is still open then one option is to put a small length of line on the tack and raise the sail higher (obviously only if you have a sail that has a little room on halyard/stay/furler at the head). This has the effect of pulling down more on the clew which is the same as moving the lead block forward.

Good point. Is your jib luff taught? Do you get much curve in the headstay in moderate winds?
