Lake Michigan to New York, then Down to S. Carolina

Thinking of buying a boat ( 38 footer ) in the Chicago area and take it down to South Carolina. Any suggestions? I was thinking the waterway to NY and then south from there. it will probably happen sometimes in September and was wondering if anyone has done it this time of the year. Better time to head south from NY?
Maybe looking for one crew member with this route experience to join.

Thank you
