So sorry for your loss, and that a loving heart with the best of intentions was taken advantage of. I'm always skeptical of non-profits.

Re: Laura Dekker's Guppy destroyed on reef

She can still be an adult and still be conned. Most cons look for adult victims, they tend to have more assets than children would. Which is not to say that she was conned. But if I agreed to loan an asset to someone, and they took it on themselves to loan it to someone else, who was visibly neglecting or or not taking care of it?
Yeah, we don't let Pollyanna out to play after dark.
LD may be a little less trusting and more cynical after this. At least, I hope so, for her sake. If there had been a "crew" of youths on the boat and one had been injured, guess who they would have gone after? The owner?

Sad thing Boat was probably worth quite a bit, just cause of its celebrity status.

That's sad and disheartening to hear how you were treated.

However your experiences remain and I really enjoyed reading your book.

Very sad to hear the loss of any Boat - but when incompetence is the cause it’s even worse - feel sorry for Laura ⛵️😟

Re: Laura Dekker's Guppy destroyed on reef

While the loss is unfortunate I believe her portrayal of Manihiki to be more unfortunate and a disservice.

Manihiki has 4G mobile, low latency broadband internet via LEO satellite, telecom superior to anything in USA aside from the military, and IIRC daily or close flights to Raro. It also boast black pearl farms and holds the world record sized coconut crab. IMHO Palmerston is remote. Tokelau is remote. Manihiki doesn’t fit the bill in my book and I highly recommend visiting.

It’s 1300km north of Rarotonga, its “mainland”. That’s pretty remote in anyone’s book.

She was salvaged, shipped to NZ, and repaired.

Does not seem to hold true. From Robin Lee Graham's Dove I and II, They had to sell the cars to pay the bills at the end. Tana Aebi's Varunna, even Don McIntyre's Buttercup - which was one cool boat all ended up as cheap as market and multiple owners. Dove sunk in the BVI. Last I heard Varunna was left adrift by her 4th owner off Gibraltar. I remember her for sale a number of years ago for less than market, but in desperate need of attention. There are many other record breaking boats that have succumbed to the same fate. I wish someone had the forethought to purchase those boats and put them in a museum along with the stories behind them of the PEOPLE. Most are testimony to dumb luck and shear will power of those who broke single-handed records in them. Those that buy that dream after the record was broken believe it was the vehicle and not the person...

Not sure of the Charity, and I don't think it is fair to call it a scam without knowing both sides of the story. But, if it was a charity like Sailing Angles, it was volunteers who made the journey and the one guy who stuck it out, I would really like to hear the whole story.
