leach line issue

I'm perplexed. I have a roller furling main. On port tack, the leach line is too tight and the leach curls slightly to windward. On starboard tack it is too loose, and the leach flogs. Everything else seems symmetrical between tacks.

Thoughts?

Re: leach line issue

Are you sure the main is fully unfurled?
Partial furling will add asymmetry.

It could also be your mast is misaligned. Take your main halyard to a midship stantion or toe rail on the port side, and close the clutch. Now take it to the same spot on the other side. If it's not perfectly ewuivalent, your mast is out of tune.

Re: leach line issue

If the mast is true, maybe your batten pocket arrangement, thicker on one side than the other so line has to travel further around the pocket. Just a guess.

With a mast furling sail there are not likely to be battens. Possibly vertical battens, but I suspect that the op would have mentioned them if they were present.

True, but he did not state boom roller or mast roller. I know most monos are mast furling mains. People would get better answers if they were more specific and even added a photo. The more info you give and picture you supply the more useful the responses. Otherwise you have to "suspect" or "guess" or "assume" what the poster is trying to say. It's like the posts that say "please help my engine won't start" and that's all.

Re: leach line issue

I should have been more specific. In-mast furling, vertical battens.

I checked mast alignment and it looks good. The question of whether the main is fully unfurled or not is a good one. I've wondered about that, but most recent test was with the main out to the measurement mark (black band on boom).

Will unfurl it at the dock and take some pix. More next underway.

Re: leach line issue

Do you have a topping lift or a hydraulic vang on the boom?
I am trying to think why the boom may be getting lifted on one tack versus the other.
