Longitudinal vs Transverse bunks

I've noticed that most boat layouts seem to have berths oriented parallel to the keel or close, but there are some distinct exceptions - in particular, a lot of the smaller cats seem to have elevated transverse berths in the front of the bridgedeck.

Does it matter? Is it easier to sleep in one type? I suppose the heel could make tranverse berths uncomfortable on a monohull?

Re: Longitudinal vs Transverse bunks

Yes, heel would have that as part of the choice, but when sailing it's usually better to have sea berths and lee cloths.

How you intend to use the boat should be a primary input on choice. Sleeping while traveling or mostly at anchor or marinas?

Many boats have both: V berth longitudinally, aft cabins athwartship. Mine does.

Your boat, your choice.
