Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

So I have been admiring this boat for a couple months now without every really seeing and considering it's name.

It's in the yard a few boats down from mine.

It's a 35' steel sailboat with radar. (which she says she rarely uses)

So I heard a racket over that way while I was painting some more on the bottom of my boat today.

In a while after I was done, she came walking by, and I asked her about the boat.

She told me about it and also said she was sailing Round The World singlehanded!

So far she has crossed the Atlantic and sailed the Caribbean Islands. She said she sailed up here from West Palm Beach Florida in 7 days using the Gulf Stream.

I did get to ask her about sleep as a single hander and her method once well offshore is to sleep 2 hours then get up to check.

I also asked her height like I said maybe 5'5"? She said 1.6 meters or 1.7 meters! I'm thinking 5'4"!

She sailed across from Belgium where she did use radar in those waters with fog etc.

When we introduced ourselves I thought she said her name was Secret but now I can see that it is Sigrid.

Here is her website:

The red shows her route so far:

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

Thom 225 I once surveyed a boat called "The Other Bitch"!
Interesting lady and voyage.
Funny question about her height. Lisa Blair and Ellen MacArthur are another two legend sailing pocket rockets.
Cheers

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

Part of the reason I noticed her boat was the different type of construction so I figured it had to be steel due to the angled sections.

She has windvane steering also, but it's covered so I couldn't see what type it was.

I believe she said it was of Dutch origin.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

I'll translate that caption on the top of the page for you...

" Preparation and the first part of my round the world voyage "

The book name " Going solo is my dream"

It's written in Dutch/Belgian, and her home port is listed as Blankenberge, on the Belgium coast, very close to the Dutch/Belgium border, this would suggest she is of Belgian origin.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

She flies the Belgium flag off her stern, so this would indicate she is likely to be from there.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

The way that words are spelt in her links above, would also suggest she is from Belgium.
Though Dutch and Belgium languages are very similar, they are not quite the same.

Right.

She said she sailed from Belgium and that the boat was of Dutch design.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

Yes, a Van Der Stadt design, a well known Dutch nautical architect.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

Not sure what chance that would be.

I have an ex wife to deal with which is quite enough.

She is at my home across the bay. Basically her home as well.

Looks like a well built and designed boat.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

Van der Stadt is well known for his steel boat designs....a very popular boat building material in Holland....I believe he died in 1999....

You can google his name for more info..

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

Women single handers are far and few between. In all my time on the water, I think I've met but two of them....I'm sure that there have been more, but I've not come across them.

Re: Lucky Bitch (Female Singlehander)

She said she’d be here until April then head up the Bay to visit Annapolis and maybe Tangier Island.

Her rudder is not on the boat right now and she wants to have the bottom painted. She had a shoulder injury so will have the yard guys paint it.
