He sailed it back North for many months or maybe even a year having adventures and living with locals. I do not remember too much except he went whaling, he sat on top of the boat and and it had no rudder but was steered by altering the daggerboard and sail. And a 26X with a big outboard is pretty fast. Fast enough to win a Newport to Ensenada Race beating 100 foot multihulls with plenty o wind. Few sailboat races allow using the engine, and for all I know that race may have changed that rule since then. I wouldn't chance it, but I wouldn't chance going to prison either, so maybe I am a big wuss.
It was the early version of the MacGregor 65 that won the races. The M65 is contemporary with the M26X. The early version was very very light and well canvassed, SA/D-34.

Later versions got heavier . . . and more durable.

Absolutely doable, in fact I highly recommend he try it during hurricane season because the strong winds will help him get to wherever he is going much faster.

Reincarnation as an alter boy seems an appropriate destination.

Re: macgregor 26x from FL to South America?

a lot of you here assume he is guilty...he claims that the police have targeted him because of his activism...this guy is a first amendment auditor, meaning he takes video of the police to keep them in line and expose police wrongdoing and corruption etc...I do not know whether he is guilty of the alleged crime, but as someone who has watched a lot of first amendment audit videos, I can tell you that I have seen a lot of police retaliation and illegal acts by police

Re: macgregor 26x from FL to South America?

here is a link to where he said he has been indicted on the sex assault on a minor (I think it was his daughter from many years back--no statute of limitations on sex assault of a minor in texas)...if I recall correctly, he got 10 years probation back in the 80s for sex assault on a minor ...so, if he were to be convicted this time, being in his mid 50s, he might not get out at all...possibly...anyway, I have no idea if he is guilty or innocent...but some people on comments on other videos commenting about this guy speculate that he might run...I have no idea if that is what he actually plans...anyway, I thought the idea of him running on his day sailor to latin america would be an interesting subject to explore:

in that video with his boat, he claims to have considerable experience in boating...in a video from a year ago or so, he is shown boating in a powerboat...

Re: macgregor 26x from FL to South America?

If he comes thru Mexico, or Belize or Guate he'll have to check in with Passports and Boat Docs or any time he touches a dock the Port Authority will come check on him. Even just a fueling stop in Mexico from boats that have not 'checked in' or carry appropriate paperwork will get Capitania over for a look see. And if he's not carrying insurance papers in Mexico bye bye boat. He might run, but he won't run far - and that's not even beginning to address the issue of the Coasties' right to board any USA flagged vessel in International Waters, this seems to be happening a fair bit right now in our Caribbean.

Possible? Yeah I guess so. Feasible? No. He should just man up and face the music.
