Marina in New Bern destroyed, which one?

There is a short video clip from NBC25 showing a marina in New Bern being torn up. At the beginning of the clip is a sign that ends with Marina and the left hand section, not really very clear, almost looks kike the logo of the Bridge Point Marina. But then a little into the video it shows, what looks like, the Double Tree (Hilton) hotel in the background.

Anybody know for sure which marina it is? We've stopped there several times in the past and some friends of ours have a boat there but I don't know which marina.

Thanks, Bob

Yes, that's the Bridge Point Marina. Very sad.

Unfortunate but not surprising. Reminds me of another recent thread in which someone asked if he would be better staying in the marina during a storm. While no place is safe, marinas are the last resort.

Depends on the Marina.
One I was in in Panama City I knew was not a good place to be in a storm and I had a plan to go up in a protected Bayou.
Marina I am in now I believe is a very safe Marina, it’s why I am here

Lots of people believe that. The problem is not so much the marina infrastructure although that can be the weak link but rather the other boats in the marina in close proximity, many of which are often secured poorly if at all.

That is why marinas often tell people to evacuate their boats.

This is awful. But we all kind of knew the problem surge was going to present. Still, it hurts when you see those masts sticking out of the water. As I weathered Irma last year in a hotel somewhere in central Florida, I was wishing my good ole fat lady was doing fine in Fort Pierce. But I did have nightmares of finding her with her mast sticking down. Nothing happened, my marina left with a clear slate luckily. I feel for the people who lost their boats or homes.

That is definitely what is left of the Bridge Point Marina. I kept my boat there many years ago. Notice that these pictures were taken in daylight, while the high water occurred closer to midnight. The bridge point marina had floating docks but the pilings were not as tall as those at the Grande across the river. Oriental had 8.5 feet of surge and with a NE/E wind New Bern usually gets a couple of feet more water than Oriental. I would guess that he water over topped the Pilings. I hope the Grande did a bit better, we have several friends with their boats there.

Which marina in New Bern is next to the Sheraton Hotel?
(Stayed in the hotel years ago and enjoyed walking the docks looking at sailboats. Ended up buying a similar CSY later, got the inspiration at the New Bern Marina 1997.)

All that one needed to do was move about a day sail south several days ago when ithe storm track was known. There is no need to sacrifice your boat to the dice roll.

That is the Grande Or Grand, I don't remember how they spelled it. I Think the Sheraton is now Hilton.

That is part of it, other parts are how much fetch is there and location.
I’m about 18 miles up the St John’s, just past Jacksonville in an off shoot river from the St John’s, with a fetch of about 200 yds, and large pilings about 15 to 20’ above high tide.
I can handle the boats near me if I have to, I have about 1,000 ft of line if needed.
I feel as secure here as I did up that Bayou in Panama City.
Problem there is you get good and set, and someone anchors just upwind of you, throws their danforth in and leaves in another boat.

Even being on land has its issues, you do the best you can.

A few of those boats had tattered sails, the owner couldn't be bothered to take them down. If they won't take a sail down there is no way in heck they would trouble themselves to head south.

Darn shame, makes you wonder why they even have a boat.

I wonder how yacht insurance will be affected. My policy states that I need to be hauled out or the yacht needs to be north of Brunswick Ga to have hurricane coverage.

Re: Marina in New Bern destroyed, which one?

The first marina in the video is BridgePointe but I believe there is video from another also. Lived at BridgePointe 3 years ago. Was told mandatory to remove boats from there in the event of a hurricane. Policy after the marina was destroyed by a hurricane previously.
I hauled out across the Neuse at Bridgeton boat yard for the hurricane threat 3 years ago, great boatyard with very nice owners.

That was by todays standards an out dated marina. Floating docks and finger piers out of reinforced cement with pilings of the same driven through openings through the dock sections, with rollers, seems to be todays best.
