Matt Rutherford - Sail around the Americas

The story of Matt Rutherford is on Amazon Video for free.

He sailed completely around the Americas heading North first after he exited the Chesapeake Bay on an old and leaky Albin Vega 27.

The started out from Annapolis on his borrowed Vega 27.

He had no radar, no AIS, no internet, but did have a cell phone.

He spent 309 days at sea alone, and sailed 27,000 miles.

Re: Matt Rutherford - Sail around the Americas

His parents were in a Cult when he was a child.

It took him years to get passed that and recover.

It's all in the movie/documentary.

He also taught himself to sail like many of us here on a junk boat he bought.

He did say being stuck on the sailboat was quite boring at times.

Re: Matt Rutherford - Sail around the Americas

So he did have AIS, but at some point during the trip, all his batteries failed as did most everything else on the boat including the engine.

So he had no lights much of the time.

He did have sails though, his rudder was good, and he was able to keep his Monitor Windvane working.
