Re: Mono in distress

I was in Fremantle when they turned up with Bullimore and the 'invisible man'. Well .. Thierry Dubois might as well have been invisible as the local media totally ignored him.

Re: Mono in distress

It is worth noting that Australia's Search & Rescue Region is one of the largest in the world, covering 10% of the earth's surface. It is a very large area for a country of only 24M people.

That said, I think few Aussies would begrudge the Search & Rescue costs. What goes around, comes around.

Re: Mono in distress

Australia's search and rescue is awesome. Even when you sail over the top which is quite remote a border control planel flys over everyday and contacts you via the vhf, somedays I couldn't even see them. Im very confident if you are in trouble in Australian waters and have a epirb ,someone will come, regardless of cost.

The way you have reacted makes me think you use the rescue services on a regular basis.
Dear slug, I happen to have never needed the fabulous rescue services offered by this wonderful country, I will continue to sail the seas and if the need should ever arise I would appreciate their skills and availability.
I find it interesting that your approach appears to be if you can't play the ball you play the player.
Should you ever need the assistance of somebody to help you from the lazyboy recliner that you appear to sail i am sure that the appropriate rescue services will be there to assist.
Anyhow have a nice day and enjoy the life that you have.
Cheers

Re: Mono in distress

As an Australian taxpayer, I am happy for our government and volunteer agencies to be rescuing sailors. Australia has a proud tradition of doing such things over and beyond what other nations might consider reasonable.

Where else in the world do you have a volunteer bushfire fighting force such as our that is basically 100% volunteer? Most of our boat rescues are also carried out by volunteers and we have volunteer search and rescue teams and volunteer emergency services teams. As mentioned we are a small population but we bat way above our weight when it comes to rescuing people on oceans.

Good to hear the traditions of the 'Mother Country' are being maintained..

As I said before the cost issue is usually just a media beatup.

Southern hemisphere SAR? Lets not forget Unzud, France (FP) and Chile... all have rather large areas of responsibility with small population bases.

Re: Mono in distress

Perhaps this belongs elsewhere....but there has been another rescue....by helicopter of the 3 crew on 'Jedi 1' flown off a Royal Australian Navy frigate some 1300 (?) miles off the Western Australia coast in the Indian Ocean, after losing her mast. The yacht was heading to New Zealand and the yacht appears to be still in good condition after the crew were taken off.

Might be a good end to the story. They have found the boat hoping to be able to get it back to port.

Cruise ship spotted it. AIS transponder was still working (weakly).

They sent out a plane this morning, found the boat and are now towing it in.

Re: Mono in distress

No, this is not in the news. Personal connection. Now they have their boat back I'm comfortable saying it drifted south with the east coast current to near Eden where a cruise ship identified it via AIS. They then sent out a search plane, got a good fix then found someone who agreed to tow it back to Eden.

Re: Mono in distress

All that 'I am a taxpayer' talk. Guys, why don't you join some sort of taxpayer forum?

I live in the EC and we never hear this kind of talk here, not even when an AUS or NZ boat gets rescued.

It seems like in the Southern hemisphere the value of a rescue dollar is at least twice that in the Northern latitudes.

Or what?
