Re: Musk says Starlink will work on boats

This just appeared in the times (you need to register to read) where the Ukrainians are saying their drones are using Starlink. I find that highly suspect, but you never know.

Re: Musk says Starlink will work on boats

Those drones fly at 100mph. I'd be very surprised if they're equipped with Dishy's. Not impossible, & I expect to see them installed inside the rooves of Teslas soon, but drones?

Still, it would be extremely useful to them to have live video of what they're attacking. I'd think this would be necessary for the drone to be effective at all, & that there'd be a system already setup for this. That way they can target the artillery & rocket launchers that are causing so much damage (the Ukrainians seem to be able to deal with infantry & tanks already).

More interestingly, Musk turned on "roaming" for Ukraine, but it seems to have been turned on for ALL dishes that move from their home cell. I'm following a StarLink for RVers forum on FB. Most of them have had to change their address whenever they move, & they decide where to move to based on signal availability.

Now, many are finding that when they move, their "roaming" status becomes "true" & the system continues to operate, even while they're moving!

This is HUGE. For those with Dishy mounted on their boats, you should certainly give this a try. And I'd be very interested to see how well it works while the boat's moving.

Note that I don't think you can take them across international borders (yet) but that's another interesting test to run.

Yes, sadly I have heard reports and actual tests that report carrying a dish from one country to another (in this case specifically between Canada and US) does not work. A particular RV'er had to sell their Canadian dish and buy a new one in the US.

I heard that too, Tendos, but it was a while ago, long before Musk turned on Roaming. Maybe that test should be run again...

That'd be great. Though I suspect the reason roaming not working and switching countries not working are different. I suspect both are regulatory in nature but the former is probably some software setting. For the latter, I wonder if the hardware needs a separate approval or something like that. This is total speculation on my part though, I don't have any factual data so a test would be fantastic.

One report of an RV using his US dish in Mexico, well away from the border.
I'm looking forward to using it up the coast this summer.

Ok, a confirmation of a US dish working in Mexico would be a game changer for us. So definitely interested.

Canadian monthly is going from $129 to $140, effective June 12.
It looks like we'll be able t use it this summer up the Sunshine Coast.

Re: Musk says Starlink will work on boats

My unit just got shipped and is being delivered on Friday. I plan to mount it on the arch and play with it in US PNW (and maybe passing into Canada). I hope I can confirm or deny some of the reports about roaming, whether it works across borders etc. Will be interesting to see.

Here’s a short video clip of Starlink working on a sailboat in motion:
