Nobody is saying not to make yourself more visible. But don't make it confusing in the process. Having 2 sets of nav light (such as a tricolor plus deck lights and a steaming light while motoring) is going to make people unsure of what they're looking at. On the other hand, well placed, bright nav lights and maybe some other non-conflicting lighting to make the boat itself more noticeable will make you more visible without risking confusion on which direction you're facing, what your status is, etc.
