Re: Need help with a name

I would chose a short name, easy to spell or a name everybody in the world is familiar with and knows how to spell it.

Nobody actually knows much about all the gods around, especially coming from different cultures / history.

Vessels usually have female names, because sailors love them, they are precious and behave sometimes very capricious.

Re: Need help with a name

ALL good boat names have been taken or over used! I have been struggling for a boat name myself. I have heard it said that choosing a boat name is FAR more involved and frustrating than choosing a name for your child!

I don't have my boat yet, but I plan on getting my registry out of Titusville, FL... just off Cape Canaveral. I struggled and researched and thought... I am a huge aerospace fan, and the best homage name for me would be something to do with the space program... The Apollo program is probably the single biggest achievement of human kind... Cape Canaveral is the birthplace of Apollo.

So, I researched, and found the perfect name from Greek mythology, the birthplace of Apollo! The perfect name for my (yet to be found) boat!!! So what is the mythical birthplace of Apollo?

Delos... Alas.

For now, I am happy with another name, a REAL figure and hero from the era of Mediterranean mythology, Hypatia.

Delos is a really good name, I agree. I did look it up and there are quite a few of them. I wonder if that’s because of the Delos YouTube channel. You are right though, seems a lot of great names are overdone, even a few on my list.

Re: Need help with a name

I've had 3 boats, the first Clochard (1988 Sport Craft 24' walk around) French for vagabond, name carried from previous owners. Then came Atropos (1973C&C 25) one of the Greek Fates, the one who cut the life thread, named as a tongue and cheek to everyone who said that jumping into sailing would kill me, and my current Harbinger (1978Catalina 30) a sign of things to come.

My last dinghy had a name of sorts too, albiet not officially Dødsfelle, .. death trap..

Using that, I came up with these real nifty Klingon names:
D'urard Gunlunno
Asteng Birtorv
Onor Marstock
Ug'uhl Krawrush
Drimorf Shas
Denm'errd Jiv
Vetos K'gum
Nunmorrd Klar
Stiss Ngorshich
Miq Growroga

Try spelling these to the USCG

Re: Need help with a name

There's a little Santana 22 in our marina that speaks to me: "Maybe". "Wishy Washy" could be good, too!

Naming a boat should be fun, so don't lose sleep over it!

Re: Need help with a name

My last boat was named on a suggestion from my wife of 42 years... "let's name it after one of your granddaughters" (I have 4 of them...can you imagine the problems that would create?) Boat was named "AYE, SOAR", written across the transom with a big, black felt pen (easily refreshed with little effort). The name reflected my disdain for cosmetics, but, YES...always ready to FLY.....
