Need to Replace or Repair Chain and Rode

I believe it's time to fix my chain and rode. The link connecting to the rode is rusted, and the splice at the end of the rode is worn. Couldn't I just remove that last chain link (with a native sized bolt cutter) and re-splice the rode to it?

Of course you can, only sensible thing to do. I would take the last 2 links out and resplice with a long tapered splice to ensure the joint rolls through the winch OK.

Re: need to replace or repair chain and rode

We can't see much of the rode but the visible part looks really bad. I think it's time to replace the rode. Twist the rope open and look for wear on the inside. Besides which it's really hard to splice rope that old. Look for wear in the chain where the links ride against each other. If you see wear, replace the chain as well.

old line can be stiff and tough to splice, but doable. I believe fabric softener might help.
