Which bit? I’ve not done any courses so I’m curious about their content.

I did this one. The instructor was Jeff Cordell. Was great having a very experienced skipper who has had their fair share of problems at sea, including the 98 Syd-Hob.

Link covers course content- https://byc.org.au/sailbyc/safety-at...rvival-course/

Re: Next step?

The SSSC course is definitely a good one to do.
It is even better if you have an instructor with some real-world experience (which you had).

It is also a requirement that a certain number of crew need to have a current SSSC qual to do CAT 1 and 2 racing in Australia.

It was a sensational course.

Re: Next step?

I'm kinda amazed this has happened.
Looks like i've scored an ocean race on Moody 54 DS.

I'm still in a bit of shock. The sailing community is bloody awesome. I wont be much use but that's invaluable sea miles on a luxurious boat

I'm a happy camper and in a bit of shock.

Nice, but try not to get used to that much comfort.

Ok, well, I realise you can still make this work.

1). Replace the mattress in your allocated cabin with three layers of sacking. Soak the sacking in salt water beforehand and, if time allows, let it get mouldy.

2) Eschew all offers of cooked food from the galley and instead eat from a precompiled stack of tinned soups, beans, sauerkraut and spam, each of which has had the label soaked off.

3) Mark out an area approximately 90 cm x 60 cm in the cockpit, claim it as your own and share it with a minimum of two fenders, a small can of stale outboard fuel and random bits of rope. Do not use any other part of the boat above decks.

I feel that this should at least remotely prepare you for the sort of boat I can afford, not sure of your budget. If less than mine remove one layer of sacking, the canned sauerkraut and reduce your allocated cockpit area by 30%.

What should i be looking to do next to keep progressing? Thinking the offshore survival course?

You dont own a boat and want to take an offshore survival class? How about ASA101?

Yes, its a requirement here in Australia after the '98 Syd to Hobart that 50% of the crew in Cat 1 and 2 ocean races have the SSSC (Safety and sea survival certificate.) Which i now have.
Makes me much more attractive to race skippers as well as making me a little safer. Really good course. Get to play in life rafts and play with flares as well as sailing tactics in adverse weather. Reading weather, Real world problems and how crews overcome them. Also what they did wrong.

ASA101 seems pretty basic (Is it available in Australia?). Not sure if i'd get much out of it. Certainly may do it at a later stage but my next course will be the Maritime radio one- LROCP https://www.amc.edu.au/industry/omc/...ficiency-lrocp
1/2 thinking of doing my Coxswains ticket as well.

Re: Next step?

Sydney to Hobart is a cat 1 race and my next ocean race which starts in a couple of weeks is Australia's oldest ocean race - The Rudder cup which is a Cat 2.

Race cancelled. No Moody 54 DS trek. Feeling gutted and deflated but also relieved. 14 plus ft waves forecast.

Good call canceling it. Would of been carnage.

I even had my pillow case packed- they supply the pillows. Pillows!

50th anniversary of the Westcoaster (Melb to Hobart round the west coast of Tas) coming up.
Fingers crossed i get a call.
