Re: Next step?

I was Captain for the first time yesterday.

Took a novice friend along as crew and the two of us had a 4 hr sail.

I'm feelin pretty damn happy and dare I say it proud, with that achievement. Not just the sailing part but being able to communicate what i needed my crew to do.

We were rewarded with paragliders doing their thing off a large hill, about 50 dolphins running amuck and seals enjoying the day in the water as well.

Nothing broken and no scary moments.

lol no.

It was the Malbec 240 i normally sail on but my regular captain (who is also not the owner) wasn't able to sail that day.

I have looked at a couple of boats though...

Ah… phew.

I know where there’s a Swanson 42 coming up for sale soon. Nice boat, it even knows it’s way around the eastern half of Tassie.[emoji6]

I wish a few people around Adelaide would get their MROCP. The stuff I hear on the radio on the weekend would make you cry.

Learn to sail update: I was Captain for the second time today and for the first time in a race. Two crew.
We won.
Smashed into the wharf docking but lets not talk about that.

As long as there was no permanent damage - and you learnt from it - then all good.

It’s interesting how different it is being the skipper rather than a crew member, isn’t it.

Smashing into the wharf.....deduct one beer from allotted after race consumption quota for scratch on boat.
Add another beer deduct if minor damage
Add two beers deduct if major damage
Add six-pack deduct if damage to wharf causes ire and go sit in the corner.

Nothing to bad and hard to tell my damage from previous damage lol. Its a tidal river. No damage to other boats.

It certainly is. Had great crew which helped enormously.

It was so embarrassing but i seemed to be the only person concerned at the bar. Everyone else was "don't worry about it. You didn't hit it to hard. Its a scary spot for the boat".

Its a tidal river. The tide was going out and its an inside berth at the end of a dead end. Docking with the tide is horrible. Arse puckering stuff for a newbie and it didn't help that the outboard decided to jump up out of the water and lock in the up position when i hit reverse.

So! Well done Luke, and thanks for the report. And don't fret about the docking. Maneuvering in close quarters with a strong current is never easy, and in marinas there are often swirls in the flow that are undetectable from above and can ruin an otherwise well planned approach.

Years ago one of my long term crew bought his own boat and asked me to crew for him in his first race. As we worked our way towards the line with a couple of minutes to go, along with about thirty other boats of varying sizes, he looked pretty uncomfortable. Eventually he blurted out " Jim, on your boat this is fun... this isn't" and in fact he never again entered a race. So Luke, you're doin' fine!
