Not really in the shade

This is one of my drink holders I keep in the cockpit. It normally sits in the center console pedestal and is under the bimini and what seems like shade. But you can see the upper section that doesn't sit in the holder section of the pedestal has gotten koozie cancer. So just think about when you say to yourself "I don't need any sunscreen since I'm just sitting in the cockpit in the shade".

Re: Not really in the shade

Reflected light can be very powerful.
Many years ago I was a contract oil field welder, I woke up at about 3 am in extreme pain, my eyes had been burnt by UV light from welding, we called it getting flashed.
My helmet was in perfect condition, but I pieced together what had happened, I had been welding some, sort of back to back with another welder, and his arc light had reflected off the inside of my hood, God that was some of the worst pain I have ever experienced.
As we get closer to cruising, the wife has been buying long sleeve shirts specially made to block UV and buying big floppy hats, of course I really like the way she looks in big floppy hats too, so I like the look

I still wear sun screen, but the 50spf long sleeve tech shirts have made life much easier. I never go sailing without one.

Hope you are wearing sunscreen so you don't end up like the koozie above.

I'm presently working on my base coat. I go in for dermatology exams twice a year to have pre cancerous areas frozen. I wear it when I can, but there's only so much you can do.

Re: Not really in the shade

We have been dealing with skin cancers for years due to decades of sailing. Good news is that folks with skin cancers statistically live longer than those who dont; attributed to all that vitamin D from the sun.

A comment based on the large presumption sunscreen isn't the culprit.

Re: Not really in the shade

I've gotten very sunburnt in the shade on the water, the reflection gets you.

We preferred flannel shirts. keeps body cooler and prevents uva and uvb from penetrating. Plus the long sleeves keep arms protected.

Re: Not really in the shade

Much to my delight, many of my female friends back in the early eighties used to sail naked or at least topless.

Now they are in their fifties and sixties the sun damage is really obvious.

I have sun damage too, but was never really attractive naked.

I really got cooked many years ago snorkeling around on the surface, being in the water kept me cool, but my back got cooked in short order. Now I wear a "dive skin" if I'm swimming around snorkeling, of course diving you don't get cooked, too deep I guess.
