Even so, let's consider (real example) a 46' motor yacht with 2x300HP diesels. That thing burns about 30 liters (8 gal) of fuel per hour at 6 knots, and it doubles at 10kts. Add some quite expensive engine maintenance and my guess is that amounts to much more than a similar LOA sailboat (granted, for the same length motor yachts are a lot roomier than sailboats).

Re: Now I understand how poor i am.

Getting back to the original, which I interpreted as an observation regarding real estate values in the Fort Lauderdale area, perhaps consider locations further north. We live in Atlantic Beach and a bought a completely refurbished little house for under 300K. We are one mile from the beach and the ICW, where we keep Allie Cat. Not as tony, being in the Jacksonville area. If you must have a dock, there are plenty of communities on St. Johns River and the ICW.

If you are buying across currencies, simply buy the target currency when you see it "cheap". This way you hedge the target price and lock in the FX.

If you cannot afford the target currency, you can buy a contract (future/forward style).

The prices (here) are not up. Good cheap and expensive boats sold out. You can wait for another financial or geopolitical turmoil to shake some oranges off your favourite tree but it may actually never happen.

S/h boat prices WILL NOT skyrocket any time soon, perhaps never. I am taking bets.

Remember some sellers CANNOT lower their asking anymore as so many boats are still not fully paid back to the bank that provided (either the financing or else the mortgage). I know some obats that are not selling and the owners cannot sell them for less than X without admitting bankruptcy. You can spot many a fine boat on the market sitting there for years and never selling. The asking not altered either. Just think of it.

I think your last chance is Brexit. The Brits will lose plenty of rights in the EU and the boats and summer house markets in the Med sure will be get a shock.

But Brexit is not certain, so if you are the adventurous one, you bet. Otherwise, you act 'accordingly' ;-)

Have never had Cable...
Have never listed to Alex who...
But is it any surprise that the attacks go empty....Not really....
It's what people do on the internet when they feel threatened by ideas and thoughts some don't understand.

Yeah, I also saw a study mapping the differences between blondes and brunettes. The conclusion was that blondes had a lot more fun!

Re: Now I understand how poor i am.

Not sure where the limit is but no matter how much $$$ you have there will be boats and houses outside your financial means.

The Miami boat show when all the mega yachts show up is a good example of boats.

Thinking about it, the limit is 50 billion. If you had 50 billion $$ you could buy most houses and most mega yachts and afford to keep both.

The low end boat and gear market has already entered recession territory.

I also break out Cruisers from Boaters they are two different buying sets.
For example sales boomed to record levels during the last 2006 crash and are spiking to new record levels now as the economy slows. My gut feeling I get from talking to cruisers making their final plans to cast off is that the poor economy has pushed up their time table. They were going to cast off in a few years, but they don't want to work and spin their wheels if they see the economy slowing. A poor economy doesn't really affect the number of "cruisers" but it does cut down on the Boaters, who are just buying a boat to use on weekends and as a Condo in the local Marina.

I'm in that Category, wife being a little more conservative than I am thinks we should wait. Her primary driver is a job that she hates and cannot see working in for another five years.
I point out the house has sold, we are renting and would need to buy another house, cause who rents for five years, that would be $90,000 in rent? Hope it sells without a loss, the automobiles are aging and would need replacing.
Bottom line, I could see us working for five more years, that would put us closer to SS and increase the Retirement funds, but the rest of our money would be spent paying off new cars that would be nearly worthless in five years etc.
I can't make a case for waiting longer.

Boats and airplanes are the same sales wise, Gulfstream is sold out years in advance for their base price 65 million Biz jet, but the little airplanes the working class used to fly have essentially been out of production for years.
It would appear the working class no longer has the disposable income of old.
I read the other day that the delivery of multi-million dollar Mega Yachts was way up and it was a fast growing industry.

Re: Now I understand how poor i am.

Just so you know a billion $$$ is 1,000 million. I still believe even a 1,000 million there would be mega yachts and houses you could not buy and keep up. Paying property tax and all the up keep a mega yacht would require.

Re: Now I understand how poor i am.

I think some of the larger estates were a 100 million. Some of the yachts that were not military size were in the 30 million range. So I think if u ate Top Ramen and Micky D's u might be able to scrape by on a billion. Smile. It ain't no joke to see how poor u are when looking at their wealth. I don't wish anything bad for them. Obviously, whatever it took to get that... Wasn't in my life cards dealt to me.

Re: Now I understand how poor i am.

Had a lovely day on the boat yesterday, warm, pleasant breeze, all alone and peaceful so I drank a few beers, got a few jobs done and snoozed for an hour. Wunderbar! . . . and I didn't even leave the dock.
