NYS + Florida

Hi Friends,
I’m a Florida resident considering buying a boat in New
York State for use in New York State,
specifically on Lake Champlain.
This would be a private party sale with no brokers.
Anybody have any ideas about where and how to
title and register. Not interested in cheating on
sales or any other tax just the best way to accomplish
the process.
I’m thinking that having no address in NY
that I have to title and register in Florida.
Cheers
Neil

Re: NYS + Florida

If the boat is located in NY, and will be staying in NY, the you almost certainly have to pay NY sales tax, and register it in NY. This is sort of the "normal" way for it to be done. I would suggest a google search to find the details about buying a boat in NY.

The boat must be registered in the “state of principal use”. Both NY and Florida use 90 days as a test of principal use, if the boat is in the state for longer than that then principal use is determined unless you can prove otherwise under certain exceptions/exemptions.

Re: NYS + Florida

I have no problem registering the boat in NY
but it is my understanding that to do that I need
a NY address.
I’ll have to see if I can register in NY
but have a Florida title
Surely i’m not reinventing the wheel here
but it’s hard to decipher two different states
rules and satisfy both at the same time
Cheers

Drop in to a Florida automobile (and boat) registration office and ask them. They'll have run into that question a zillion times and can answer straight.
