Oh, I coulda done that, if I really WANTED to

30 knots for 3 and a half days straight? Oh yeah, with a little tweaking, I bet I could get that too... any REAL sailor could...

Re: Oh, I coulda done that, if I really WANTED to

30 knots, 3.5 days? That's an average of 8.5 knots per day - sounds doable.

I double checked the math and everything.

Ya know, IirC the RTW speed record is held by a sailing vessel, not a power vessel. And for that matter, again IIRC, even a single handed sailor has gone RTW faster than the fastest power yacht.

Who said sailing was slow?

Really? For some reason I would have thought it would have been a Naval ship

Not many navies send ships on non-stop RTW passages. I suppose that some nuke subs might have done, but we're not told about these!

Wikipedia lists this: Earthrace; 2008; wave-piercing trimaran, with two 540 horsepower multi-fuelled engines; current world record holder for a motorized vessel (disputed with USS Triton, 1960), in 60 days 23 hours and 49 minutes.
Quite a few sailing vessels have bettered this time...

I couldn't quickly find much about the submarine Triton's claim, but I'd be surprised if they followed the 'rules" about what constitutes a proper circumnavigation, as promulgated by the sailing records folks.

LOL . Math: 2450 miles divided by 89 hours is an average of about 27.7 knots.

Check it again? 30 knots for 3.5 days is a 30 knot avg. 3.5 days = 3.5 x 24 or 84 hours. 84 hours at 30 knots is 84 x 30 = 2520 ktm

Question how can a constant 30 knots avg 8.5 knots per day?

Is there a set path that is considered rtw or can you just circumnavigate Antarctica ?

Re: Oh, I coulda done that, if I really WANTED to

I think AnglaisInHull's math is all fuzzy! They did 30 knots every day for three and a half days. So that's 105 knots total.

Assuming you're not allowed to repeat your knots, they must have tied just about everything from the Albright Special to the Zeppelin Bend.

;-)

They wouldn't have had much spare time for sailing then.

Guess there are couple of people here who missed the point of AnglaisInHull's joke
Hey Seadoc, What is "ktm" supposed to stand for?

Nope, they'd only be about 3% of the way through The Ashley Book Of Knots .
